Job Summary

Walt Disney Imagineering's Research & Development organization is building a new Intelligent Interactive Character Studio to allow Guests and our beloved characters to share new interactive experiences and stories. The team is comprised of a cross-disciplinary group of designers, writers, artists, and software engineers. Its charter includes developing a robust and scalable entertainment platform supporting interactive character experiences with up to millions of concurrent users. The studio develops mobile, VR, AR, Mixed Reality, and custom physically situated applications built on a core platform, independently and in partnership with 3rd party developers.

The Role

We're seeking a conversational designer to create and implement interactive conversation-based experiences for our guests. You will have proven experience designing and deploying interactive, digital characters and will contribute not only to the deployment of specific current projects but also to the development of authoring tools that power these state-of-the-art character experiences. You are open-minded, highly collaborative, flexible, and scrappy, while ensuring a high degree of polish for guest-facing products and experiences. Members of the new Intelligent Interactive Character Studio are expected to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-style environment where ambiguity and building things from zero to one are the norm.

Responsibilities/You Will

• Create characters who are immersive, authentic, and consistent across a diverse set of topics, conversational paradigms, and guest responses
• Write, test, and refine content. Work on the front end of experience development, brainstorming, and outlining as well as producing final lines for production
• Guide tool development, partnering with engineers to define, test, and refine authoring and testing platforms
• Actively participate in testing and feedback sessions, identify "holes" in the logic or experience and provide solutions for other team members and users.

Basic Qualifications/You Will Have

• 5+ years of experience as a UX designer, interaction designer, VUI designer, UX writer, screenwriter, playwriter, or narrative designer
• Working understanding of speech, language, and voice recognition technologies.
• Ability to define and express new concepts through treatments, script-walk-throughs, improv, or prototyped interactive experiences
• Experience working with newly developed or in-production technical tools, where creative insight is required to contribute to development.
• Story development, script writing, and editing experience within Narrative Game Design, Animation, Television, or Theatre.
• Ability to manage & prioritize multiple assignments in a highly dynamic production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building experiences for existing voice-based assistant platforms such as Alexa Skills, Google Home, or creating narrative scripting for interactive experiences or games.
• Experience directing voice-over actors
• Experience deploying interactive experiences to thousands of customers or guests, gathering feedback, and providing post-mortem insights for future development.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in game design, interaction design, film, English, creative writing, communications, linguistics, or psychology
