Video Connectivity - Senior Research Engineer 1

Employer

Job Description

Barco designs technology that makes everyday life a little better. Seeing beyond the image, we develop sight, sound, and sharing solutions to help customers work together, share insights, and wow audiences. By unlocking the creative power of technology, we aim to enable "bright outcomes" for our customers.

As a senior research engineer, you will be working in Barco Labs, a team of highly skilled experts exploring new technologies and building first-of-a-kind proof of concepts for our Healthcare, Enterprise and Entertainment divisions or venturing into new markets.

In this ever more digital and hybrid world, live streaming and remote immersive experiences are key and require new solutions. Think e.g. about multi-viewpoint interpolation for live streaming of XR content. The other way around, new technologies like light field video, 5G and AI might enable new user experiences and product opportunities. Through internal demonstrators we challenge ourselves to stay on top of state-of-the-art codecs and streaming protocols, ranging from uncompressed over light, medium and high compression domains. We explore standards-based vs. proprietary solutions where specific needs arise. This can include application-specific video quality metrics, error resilience and best-effort network adaptivity for (life) critical professional applications. To demonstrate new use cases to our internal and external stakeholders, end-to-end demonstrators tie everything together from the physical layer and SW algorithms to the application innovation.

Key Responsibilities
  • As an outcome-oriented researcher, you seek to in-depth understand end-user problems and think of innovative solutions, implement them and secure stakeholder confirmation.
  • You pragmatically implement first-of-a-kind prototypes combining state-of-the-art HW, software libraries and SDKs with new, innovative steps and algorithms.
  • Being a thought leader in the domain, you maintain a foundational tech roadmap and provide insights on strategic levels as well as you are a sparring partner for the Barco architects and R&D teams.
  • You stay up to date with the new academic and commercial developments and trends in video connectivity (physical layer as well as codecs and streaming protocols and application domains) and disseminate these insights and expertise to your peers.
  • As a team player, you collaborate with your peers, internal stakeholders and potentially external partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.

We Are Looking For a Barco Colleague Who
  • Has a master or PhD in computer science engineering (or equivalent)
  • Has a minimum of 4 years of experience in the video connectivity domain, its building blocks as well as application level innovation.
  • Understands the high level landscape of codecs and protocols and the technology behind them for different domains such as uncompressed (smpte 2110, IPMX), light (JPEG-XS), medium (NDI, HEVC-INTRA, RIST vs SRT) and high compression (CDN, WebRTC, HAS, H.266/VVC, VP9/10, AI-based compression,…).
  • Has worked hands-on with one or more of the above technologies and knows where state-of-the-art is heading. Loves algorithms and rapid prototyping.
  • Has experience with or is eager to learn techniques for cloud video distribution, context-adaptive coding, immersive remote presence (3D, multi-viewpoint, lightfield, VR/AR/MR live streaming etc.) as well as leveraging state-of-the-art HW (5G, 60 GHz wireless video,…)
  • Has a hands-on innovation mindset with proven technical, analytical and problem solving skills in earlier projects and expertise respected by peers.
  • Is able to disseminate in a clear and convincing way new technologies and their opportunities to technical peers, non-technical business people and management.
  • Has experience with steering the innovation course on project level, taking into account feasibility, desirability and viability inputs as well as helping more junior researchers or developers in the right direction.
  • Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards an end result that meets the requirements and constraints, that is evaluated and documented.
  • Is pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership.
  • Is a loyal team player with good (English) communication skills and willing to travel on occasion.
