At Meta Reality Labs, our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for an industry leader of optical engineering to accelerate our innovation and product development. You will focus on the most challenging optical problems, utilize your expertise, experience and industry connection to find the solutions that will enable our AR/VR roadmap.

Optical Engineer - Technologist Responsibilities:

  • Deeply understand Meta’s AR/VR/Metaverse Roadmap. Identify emerging optical technologies that could enable future product roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to establish the optical technology roadmaps, establish workstreams and enable future technology development.
  • Prioritize the technologies for cross functional teams based on their potential, alignment with our roadmaps and technical challenges.
  • Communicate and align with executive leadership and cross functional teams on our technology roadmaps.
  • Closely collaborate with product teams to solve the most challenging technology and product issues.
  • Operate at a high level of abstraction, connecting the dots, understanding and articulating the strategy.
  • Champion engineering excellence in a data driven culture.
  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics with 15+ years of experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in both optical research, and optical system product development.
  • Expertise in optics, optical engineering, display, optical metrology and imaging optics.
  • Experience in optical design tools such as Zemax or Code V.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven communication skills.
  • Proven logical and creative thinking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with projects for AR or VR optical systems.
  • Experience on large volume optical product development.
  • Experience in both sequential and non-sequential optical design and modeling.
