Polymers Manufacturing Engineer

Employer

Job Description

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Polymers Manufacturing Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test soft wearable systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in driving development of novel manufacturing processes from concept to pilot-production to deliver reliable, high performance hardware prototypes. The development of state-of-the-art prototypes will require the intersection of materials, manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, and software fields. The successful candidate will possess experience with a wide variety of polymer manufacturing processes, be comfortable collaborating with a team of engineers to rapidly develop and scale novel technologies and manufacturing processes, and have the ability to work with a team of researchers with tolerance for a high degree of ambiguity. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Polymers Manufacturing Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Research Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians to build novel technologies and manufacturing processes which have a path to mass-manufacture
  • Drive manufacturing activities in a cross-functional work environment to deliver reliable, high performance wearable prototypes
  • Scale state-of-the-art technologies and manufacturing process from proof-of-life to pilot-production volumes
  • Grow in-house manufacturing capabilities and external manufacturing partnerships
  • Raise the bar for manufacturing excellence and best practices by developing, and continuously improving, processes and relationships which empower researchers and design engineers to build increasingly complex systems

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS degree in the fields of Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related area, or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated experience scaling polymer processes from proof-of-life to pilot-production or mass manufacture, implementing Design For Manufacturing (DFM), Six Sigma Design of Experiments (DOE), and quality control strategies to resolve processing problems as they arise
  • 5+ years of experience with a wide variety of thermoset and thermoplastic polymer manufacturing techniques, such as multishot/insert molding, stencil and screen printing, photopolymer 3D printing, roll-to-roll processing, thin film processing, and material compounding
  • Demonstrated communication and project management skills with experience directing priorities to meet schedule milestones and stakeholder requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years working on high-volume consumer products
  • Experience with design and/or production of wearable technologies
  • Experience with mass production of systems requiring multiple manufacturing processes such as: casting, molding, machining, electronics packaging, coatings, additive manufacturing, adhesive application, and laminating
  • Experience with CAD, such as SolidWorks or related programs
