From mixed reality and human interaction to natural inputs and beyond, TED is focused on transforming new technologies from early concept to product by iterating, prototyping, and realizing the human value and new experiences these technologies enable.The Depth HW team within TED develops high-performance depth solutions for FRL’s AR/VR products. This multidisciplinary group brings research to life by realizing state-of-the-art custom modules including ASICs, lasers, optics, firmware etc. Depth HW team is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Lead for end-to-end ownership of laser based optical modules from initial design to high volume delivery.We are seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who has a passion for working across disciplines to transform research technologies into physical solutions.

Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer (University Grad) Responsibilities:

  • End-to-end ownership of full module design architecture from concept through launch.
  • Collaborate in a team environment with program managers, electrical engineers, optical scientists, supply chain and many more.
  • Leverage overseas teams (CM/JDM/Vendors) to maximize the focus of our internal resources on adding value and differentiation to our products.
  • Design parts and assemblies to fulfill Depth Sensing lab projects and fast prototyping needs.
  • Draft production drawings and conduct tolerance analysis.
  • Build, validate test fixtures and prototype various optical systems.
  • Conduct quick mechanical troubleshooting and failure analysis.
  • Support other engineers with design of experiments, testing and assembly as needed.
  • Work with module integrators and internal cross-functional teams to build, test and deliver module prototypes.
  • Work with relevant experts to drive structural and thermal simulations for module designs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1+ years experience working on mechanical designs and/or related internship/co-op experience.
  • 1+ years experience creating 2D and 3D assemblies in CAD or related internship/co-op experience.
  • Physical prototyping, testing, metrology and part inspection experience.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related degree.
  • Opto-mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience defining complex subsystems or product level mechanical architectures.
  • Knowledge of designing parts for various manufacturing methods (stamping, CNC, 3D printing, injection molding, etc.).
  • 2D drafting with close attention to ASME Y14.5 GD&T practices and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
