Job Description
At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Research Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to create highly flexible electronics devices with uncompromised performance. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in building flexible electronics through advanced printing methods and by optimizing process parameters following thorough characterization of patterned materials, and for someone who can work with a team of researchers who are solving the materials, manufacturing and performance needs for a new paradigm of worn devices. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Research Engineer, Flexible and Stretchable Electronics Printing Responsibilities:
- Optimize print and thin film deposition processes by analysis of deposited materials and tuning process parameters, materials inputs, print modalities and process methodologies. Optimization targets include dimensional, mechanical, electrical and scale metrics.
- Collaborate with research scientists and engineers from broad disciplines to translate complex technology needs into defined target metrics.
- Advise on and implement new patterning technologies as external technologies progress.
- Describe outcomes of manufacturing processes and their broad technology implications in detail, while communicating effectively to cross-functional teams to drive informed paths forward.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Masters or PhD degree in chemical engineering, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4+ years experience optimizing manufacturing processes utilizing inkjet printing, screen printing, gravure printing, aerosol jet printing, piezo-jet dispensing, or slot die coating.
- 2+ years experience with use of patterning techniques for use in 2D or 3D printed electronics, flexible-hybrid electronics or wearable devices.
- 2+ years experience with analysis of patterned materials, including material geometry and topology, electrical characterization, mechanical characterization, and/or surface analysis, with experience translating print results into process tuning needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AutoCAD, or similar, circuit design process including schematic capture, PCB layout, and footprint/symbol creation.
- Experience fabricating flexible hybrid electronic devices with multiple patterned materials stacks and SMT or MCU components attachment.
- Experience with tuning material or formulation properties to fit specific printing methods.
- Experience patterning onto flexible or stretchable materials (PDMS, textile, etc.) or onto 3-dimensional surfaces.
