We are currently seeking innovative scientists with in-depth knowledge and experience with liquid crystal materials and optical devices. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in material, liquid crystal, chemistry, polymer, optical science or engineering, or similar, and strong background in liquid crystal materials, optical films and innovation.

Research Scientist, Functional Materials and Devices (PhD) Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of additive printing, 3D forming and laminating processes with liquid crystal polymers to enable novel optical films and devices.
  • Work closely with optical/process/mechanical engineers to advance liquid crystal (LC) and reactive mesogen (RM) materials development and related devices design & prototype.
  • Contribute to materials roadmaps, engineering specifications and product development, as point of contact accountable for material related requests.
  • Support evaluation and characterization of materials and optical components.
  • May oversee engineers' work based on project needs and work experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Material Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Optics, Physics, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Expertise in liquid crystal and reactive mesogen materials, and surface alignment.
  • 2+ years research experience in precise coating, additive printing, multi-layer lamination, and metrology.
  • Experience in polarization or diffraction optical films, or liquid crystals technology.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in prototyping optical components for AR/VR viewing optics (e.g., lens, waveguides, etc.) and display modules (LCD, OLED, ULED, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and experience shifting priorities to meet business needs and deadlines.
  • Experience in liquid crystal optic simulation tools or methods, such as MATLAB, Python, LCD Master or equivalent, COMSOL, Jones Matrices, FDTD, or RCWA.
  • Innovation and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences.
