Research Scientist, Perception and Cognition

Employer

Job Description

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated research scientist to join our team, whose mission is to create and apply scientific knowledge about perception and cognition to improve human experiences in mixed reality worlds. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in defining and executing human behavioral experiments with a focus on perceptual science or a focus on developing computational models of perception and perceptual-motor control and who can work with a team of researchers who are implementing perceptually-motivated solutions for haptic and multisensory rendering in human computer interaction for future AR and VR experiences. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Research Scientist, Perception and Cognition Responsibilities:

  • Devise and execute research plans, aligned with team goals, to investigate ways to improve perception and performance in mixed reality environments through multisensory integration and multimodal information portrayal
  • Work effectively with a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers & engineers within and across teams
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns, contribute to your peer’s projects and work closely with external academic groups to advance our research goals

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Holds a PhD degree in the field of Psychology, Neuroscience, Engineering, or a related field with a particular research focus on perception (multisensory, haptic), cognitive science, engineering psychology or related areas
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar
  • 2+ years experience with interdisciplinary research that spans both perceptual research and engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in the domain of multisensory integration, multimodal interface design, perceptual-motor or sensorimotor control
  • 2+ years experience in augmented/virtual reality, psychophysics, engineering psychology, or computational modeling
  • 2+ years experience building warm connections with customers and team members through effective communication and collaboration and in delivering results in a goal-oriented environment
  • 2+ years of experience in industry or other relevant setting applying perceptual knowledge to solve engineering problems
