Job Description
At Reality Labs (RL), our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that ship in five to ten years. Come work alongside world leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications.
Research Scientist, Waveguide Fabrication (PhD) Responsibilities:
- Research and develop fabrication process and know-hows to enable high-quality liquid crystal (LC) waveguides for enabling new design space for next generation AR/VR eyewear.
- Perform the professional research, development and evaluation of materials formulation, and optical tests of advanced liquid crystal polymers (LCP) for waveguide technologies.
- Prototype and characterize LC waveguides in the lab.
- In charge of fabrication process development and debugging to ensure desired specifications in manufacturing.
- Support optical design, modeling and optical metrology work to drive the waveguide performance iteration.
- Support technology transfer from research phase to new technology introduction.
- Collaborate with the larger research and product team to explore concepts, perform trades and drive optical system development to create compelling experiences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Science, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- 3+ years of research experience in optical materials and optical devices fabrication in cleanroom settings, and process innovation.
- 3+ years of experience in materials characterization, substrate treatment, precise coating, thin film processing, UV curing, and metrology.
- Working knowledge in optics, including polarization optics or diffractive optics.
- Research experience in one of the following areas: surface alignment, optical film development and optical patterning.
- Experience in failure analysis with ambiguities in process development and debugging.
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as Applied Optics, Optics Letters, Optics Express, SIGGRAPH, SID, OSA, SPIE or similar.
- Research experience in applying existing and emerging optical technologies, and incubating an idea from concept validation to system improvement of NEDs.
- Proficient in design of experiments and fishbone analysis for materials formulation and process development.
- Expertise in liquid crystal materials or monomer/polymer processing.
- Prototyping experience in one or more of the following areas: diffractive optical elements, holographic optical elements, and polarization holograms.
- Experience with additive printing with polymers for optical applications.
- Experience in using optical modeling tools, such as COMSOL, or Lumerical.
