The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) at Carnegie Mellon University has an open position for a Robotics Simulation Engineer. You will work on challenging problems simulating robot sensors, manipulators, and autonomous vehicles. Your simulations will help to then build real-world robotic systems that perform useful work. Current projects involving simulation include: manipulation for logistics and material handling, virtual reality design of a large scale robot, image manipulation for testing computer vision algorithms, and projects with mobile robots. You will directly help to imagine, design, and make robots that deploy in the real world.

Your primary responsibilities include:
  • Develop simulation tools to facilitate the development and testing of robotic applications.
  • Create, manage and deploy digital assets and virtual scenarios to assemble custom simulated environments.
  • Create tools to configure and interface virtual environments and analyze simulated data.
  • Participate in the software development process, including design and code reviews, taking personal ownership of the simulation implementations.
  • Support team activities to gather requirements for simulated environments, system integration and project management.
  • Generate documentation for simulation APIs and tools.

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent experience, OR 3+ years of experience in research and/or software development for simulation environments, virtual reality or modern 3D graphics/game engines.
  • Demonstrated understanding and basic use of software engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Proficient C++ skills.
  • Solid technical communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success working as part of a cross-functional team.

We especially want to hear from you if you have experience or qualifications in ANY of the following areas:
  • Experience with scripting languages for quick prototyping (Python preferred).
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 4.
  • Experience with Gazebo, V-REP/CoppeliaSim, Carla or other simulation environments.
  • Knowledge of physics simulation techniques/engines.
  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
  • Experience in Virtual/Augmented Reality and/or advanced human-computer interfaces.
  • Experience using/interfacing with robotic sensors, such a stereo cameras or LIDARs.
  • Knowledge of Computer Graphics techniques, physically based rendering or GPU programming.
  • Knowledge of 3D digital modeling and animation tools.
  • Linux development experience.
  • Software Architecture development and requirements development.
