Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries seeks a collaborative and user-centered Virtual Reality (VR) Developer Specialist to provide creative input, development, and support regarding the design and production of VR/AR/Mixed Reality (XR) projects. The VR Specialist will need a strong foundation in computer programming and the use of gaming engines to create educational and informative VR applications that help strengthen the library's position as a leader in academic XR technologies. This position will lead in the programming and development of XR experiences with a heavy emphasis on digital preservation and virtual display of real-world objects, artifacts, and spaces into immersive and interactive environments.

The Specialist will assist others in the form of consultations, trainings and demonstrations for campus clients seeking to utilize these innovative technologies in instruction, research, and outreach applications. The Libraries value excellent oral and written communication skills, a strong service orientation, a willingness to experiment with new methods and technologies, and a collaborative approach to meeting user needs. This position reports to the Director of @One Digital Media Technologies.

The ideal candidate is expected to:
  • Lead VR /XR development and programming for various virtual projects headed by the Libraries
  • Collaborate with all members of the @One Digital Media Team.
  • Establish protocols for VR/XR development best practices within the department
  • Act as lead programming consultant with internal and external stakeholders to conceptualize and review a project's technical feasibility of expected deliverables while assisting with setting and meeting timelines.
  • Develop using Unreal, Unity or equivalent gaming engine using C++/Blueprint Visual Scripting and/or C# to program, integrate acquired assets, build virtual environments, and optimize the application for VR playback and end-user experience.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Serve as active manager for Dataworks labs including first line of user support in the software and hardware associated with the lab, coordination with IT for semester refresh/reimages schedules, suggest install of applications and hardware to meet campus users' needs and fulfill university goals.
  • Assist in the build, design, and maintenance for existing and future VR kiosks around the University Libraries and community
  • Lead in the maintenance, hardware consultations and student worker training for @Reality (@One's Virtual Reality Lab)
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related work experience or a Master's Degree and one (1) year of related work experience. Related experience includes:
  • Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Media or related field or related experience
  • Design and production of interactive media, virtual reality projects, or other relevant multimedia experience or related experience
  • Experience in C++/Blueprint Visual Scripting, C#, or other relevant programming language or related experience
  • Experience with Unreal, Unity, or equivalent gaming engines or related experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion or related experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Flexibility in new and emerging technologies
  • Work effectively in a collaborative environment
  • Communicate complex subjects in an easily understood and compelling manner
  • Knowledge of Virtual Reality technology, hardware and software capabilities, concepts, workflows, and theories
  • Understanding of best practices for the development of ADA/accessible XR applications
  • Strong understanding of 3D object creation and manipulation of industry standard 3D applications (Blender, Maya etc.)
  • Lab management protocols and IT policies to ensure positive end user experience and university compliance needs are met.
  • Knowledge of Programming Languages C#, C++
  • Proficiency in Gaming Engine Development using Unity and/or Unreal

Salary & Benefits

Salary minimum is $68,000. This is a full-time, administrative faculty position at a Compensation Grade B. Competitive benefits package includes 24 vacation days plus state and federal holidays per year and tuition benefits for self and family. No state income tax.
