Director, AR Hardware Products

Employer

Job Description

At Reality Labs in Meta, we bring together the brightest cross-disciplinary minds in one place to deliver our mission: build tools that help people feel connected, anytime, anywhere. Developers, researchers, engineers and designers all working together to help build a more expansive – and more inclusive – future for all of us. The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life.

While modern-day VR headsets fully immerse people in 3D virtual environments, augmented reality takes computer-generated images and overlays them on your view of the world. Today, that’s typically accomplished using the camera on your smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device, and we’re hard at work to bring the vision of lightweight, stylish AR glasses to life. We’re developing all the exciting new technologies that will help people connect and explore in the metaverse in all-day wearable form factors – displays, cameras, optics, sensors, audio and silicon to enable computer vision, graphics, full body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Our goal is to transform how we play, work, learn, communicate, and experience the world around us.

The Director of AR Hardware Engineering will manage a large team of engineers, spanning electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, system integration and platform development, building the future AR products, working closely with the cross-functional teams supporting it.

The ideal candidates will have significant experience in leading multi-functional, highly complex, consumer electronics products – having successfully brought these products to market. They should have direct experience with prototyping new technologies in multiple areas, working to develop new processes to integrate them into products.

They must have strong interpersonal and communication skills along with a comprehensive understanding of cross-functional interconnectedness and deliverables to enable the realization of complex AR/VR products. Candidates must have keen focus on driving business results, ability to work in ambiguous/less defined environments, and strong willingness to collaborate and optimize overall business objectives.

  • Lead hardware teams in bringing complex products from concept to mass production through all phases of engineering design, development and validation.
  • Drive investment strategy and development partnerships with key component vendors/suppliers, collaborating closely with technology, supply chain and manufacturing operations teams to enable product differentiation and ensure that product cost, design for manufacturing, quality and go-to-market strategies are met.
  • Develop outstanding strategic relationships with product peers and engineering, research, business, design, and user research teams to define product requirements and architecture.
  • Organizational experience partnering with global leaders, HR and recruiting to develop and execute on a strategy to attract, retain and develop top talent and role model leadership best practices.
  • Track record and demonstrated leadership in developing nascent consumer hardware and software technologies into successful mass-market consumer products.
  • Experience thinking strategically and execute methodically in an entrepreneurial environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated experience with formulating the strategies for multiple product lines, spearheading the effort to execute against them by managing risk and prioritizing resource allocation effectively.
  • 10+ years people management experience including managing leaders and managing remotely across regions.
  • Collaboration and relationship-building experience, working with all levels of management and individual contributors internally and externally.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
