At Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Hardware Research Manager to join our team, whose mission is to research and develop new technologies that will improve human-computer interaction and create new ways to control AR devices.

You will lead a team of engineers and research scientists exploring novel wearable actuation systems. You will work cross-functionally with diverse teams including research scientists, mechanical, firmware, software, and advanced manufacturing engineers. The ideal candidate works well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, can drive a concept through design, and work in an environment with a high degree of ambiguity. Your primary role will be split between managing a team of talented researchers and creating and driving engineering principles and strategy across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and lead a team of diverse and talented researchers and hardware engineers.
  • Drive research strategy and process improvement across the organization.
  • Collaborate in a highly cross-functional environment that spans multiple engineering disciplines and research domains.
  • Provide management, career guidance, and mentorship for the team.
  • Willingness to work within ambiguous and undefined projects, and is able to synthesize them into coherent strategies and plans.
Minimum Qualification
  • 3+ years experience managing engineering teams that work on complex electromechanical systems or related areas in cross functional environments.
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Material Science, Physics or equivalent.
  • Research experience involving defining problems, exploring solutions, and analyzing results.
  • 5+ years of experience with one or multiple actuation technologies (for example: electromagnetic, pneumatic, hydraulic, piezoelectric etc.).
Preferred Qualification
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Material Science, Physics or equivalent.
  • Experience in research of novel wearable actuation systems.
  • 10+ years of experience with multiple actuation technologies (for example: electromagnetic, pneumatic, hydraulic, piezoelectric etc.).
