At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware systems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Technical Program Manager to join our team, whose mission is creating the future of input and interaction for AR and VR. We are looking for an experienced people manager to manage and grow an existing team of TPMs driving research programs to build the future of AR and VR interactions. This includes driving the creation of research vision, development of new technologies across hardware and software, end-to-end program management of a broad research portfolio, development of the tools and processes necessary to track and manage work, and ensuring teams are on track to deliver against our long term ambitions.The right candidate will possess a strong program management background, will have demonstrated experience leading large projects across multiple interdisciplinary teams, as well as building and growing an organization of TPMs. You will have a well-rounded technical background, with experience in early stage hardware and/or software products. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means you are not only able to manage the team, develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. Ideal team members are adaptable and resilient, eager to attack unfamiliar problems with curiosity and tenacity, and able to use a light touch to find ways to help the team be more efficient.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for people management of a Research TPM organization - hiring, developing and implementing organizational structure, delivering performance reviews, providing continual feedback, coaching and career growth for direct reports
  • Partner with research, engineering and product management leadership to define and revise the long-term strategy for the organization
  • Be the go-to person for a large portfolio of work - maintain full visibility of the project status and potential roadblocks, own technical communication and documentation in executive and leadership reviews, and maintain or develop processes to manage work successfully
  • Lead the organization through ambiguity, maintaining both a focus on successful delivery of program milestones, while balancing the reality of a rapidly changing and dynamic research environment
Minimum Qualification
  • 12+ years of software engineering, systems engineering, hardware engineering, or technical product/program management experience in research or product environment
  • 5+ years as a People Manager and experience managing Managers, including building and growing teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Science or equivalent experience in a relevant technical domain
  • Operational excellence with experience creating program and communication structures in highly matrixed and high ambiguity environments
  • Experience driving complex programs with both hardware and software components
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience in academic research environments, incubation teams, or other early stage, 0-1 product development
  • Experience tech transferring research programs to a product team
  • Understanding of haptics, materials science, smart materials, wearables, novel input and interaction technologies, AR/VR, or brain computer interfaces
  • Start-up experience as a leader or co-founder of the organization
  • Experience developing a Program Framework for Operational and Engineering Excellence (PDP process, NTI process, Product Design Process, etc.)
