At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. The Advanced Materials Group at FRL is seeking an Advanced Materials Engineer with special expertise in Inorganic Crystal Growth and Processing to develop new materials for consumer near-to-eye displays at our research and development facilities. You will work cross-functionally with other Research Scientists and Engineers in Display & Optics to realize high performance optical products using novel material systems.
Responsibilities
- Be the subject matter expert on inorganic crystal growth techniques, equipment and raw materials design and selection, backend processing for the wafering of the crystals and competitive market analysis.
- Lead crystal growth operations, including chemical batching, selection of input materials, process monitoring & optimization, crystal characterization & quality control, and subsequent crystal processing & wafering.
- Define crystal specifications, growth method, test plan, and associated methodologies. Good understanding of relevant process controls and modeling principles.
- Lead research and development effort to improve understanding of fabrication process-optical property relationship for wide band gap materials.
- Support engineering activities and process improvements, both internally and in conjunction with external partners.
- Engage cross-functionally with other researchers, engineers and strategic sourcing teams in Facebook AR/VR to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline including hardware, software, integration, infrastructure, and applications.
- Identify risks, track and resolve issues through various phases of production.
Minimum Qualification
- PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience and management of crystal growth using a variety of methods (PVT, Hybrid-PVT, PVD, CVD) for bulk compound semiconductors.
- 5+ years of experience in crystal defect characterization of boules and substrates using structural, electronic, and optical techniques.
- 5+ years of experience in modeling and simulation of thermal and kinetic growth processes using e.g. Comsol CFD, CGSim, and Virtual Reactor.
- Experience diagnosing and mitigating technical issues throughout crystal growth, including during synthesis, equipment function, process variations, and crystal characterization.
