Audio DSP Engineer, FRL Research

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook Reality Labs Research brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality. The Audio Research team is focused on harnessing the power of AR and VR to make virtual sounds indistinguishable from reality and give audio superpowers to billions of people, forever transforming the way we work, play, and connect. We believe that a key component of this mission is to improve and enhance human hearing for people at all levels of hearing ability in all aspects of their daily life.We are looking for an Audio DSP Engineer to join our growing interdisciplinary team, working to solve difficult problems at the intersection of digital signal processing, acoustics, hearing sciences, auditory perception, multimodal interaction, and artificial intelligence. In this position, you will focus on designing, prototyping, and maturing DSP algorithms to solve unique challenges in AR audio use cases. You will engage in advanced development efforts aiming to produce compelling proofs-of-experience built on cutting-edge audio technologies in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of engineers, research scientists, and experience designers. You will practice good judgment and understanding of system-level impact of design choices to deliver a highest performing implementation of design concepts. By demonstrating the experiential value and product viability of research technologies that are yet to be found in existing consumer audio devices, these advanced development efforts ultimately aim to introduce new audio technologies to AR products.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement real-time DSP algorithms in collaboration with research scientists and audio system engineers that meet system-level constraints for wearable audio devices with microphones and speakers
  • Translate audio algorithms implemented in MATLAB or other prototyping frameworks into a high-performance, architecture-specific code
  • Contribute to the microarchitecture definition of audio DSP algorithms implemented on an embedded system
  • Influence the technology transfer of research algorithms to product teams
Minimum Qualification
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as electrical engineering, digital audio, acoustics, and 2+ years of industry experience in real-time audio signal processing, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3+ years of programming experience in C/C++ for real-time signal processing
  • 2+ years of experience with real-time, embedded audio processing for audio hardware and communication applications
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or other prototyping frameworks
  • Proven understanding of DSP fundamentals
Preferred Qualification
  • Demonstrated experience in designing advanced audio algorithms for consumer devices (e.g. microphone array processing, spatial audio rendering, active noise cancellation, echo cancellation, noise suppression, multi-band compression, adaptive filtering, speaker protection)
  • Demonstrated experience in optimizing algorithm for a specific DSP instruction set, considering trade-offs between performance, system architecture, and resources
  • Demonstrated experience in optimizing algorithm performance by leveraging hardware accelerators
  • Understanding of DSP hardware architecture including processor cores, memory, and buses
  • Demonstrated experience in building a DSP microarchitecture
  • Interpersonal skills and experience working in a cross-functional and inter-disciplinary team to tackle research problems
