The Director, Simulations will lead the thermal and structural design teams serving all of Facebook Reality Labs, including all AR, VR, Portal and Wearables products. These teams will analyze, parametrize, model and design the thermal systems and structural elements for our next-generation devices, including new sensing systems, power/thermal systems, and display/optics systems or new overall input devices and full VR headsets. They will help solve the most complex failures that these teams face, and use those learnings to inform the design of future programs.The role requires expert technical leadership, as well as communication with cross-functional teams across ID, hardware engineering, partnerships, silicon, research, supply chain and core technology groups to drive incubation of new technologies from proof of concept through integration into products for mass production. This role will be heavily relationships-focused, as the leader will need a strong grasp of product roadmaps across FRL and the resources required to help solve the problems that are likely to arise. Responsibilities
  • Technical delivery on hardest thermal and structural problems across FRL products, including analysis and proposed solutions to complex failure modes.
  • Development and acquisition of new and/or alternative analysis methods, either translating them from research or academia, developing or acquiring new software and analysis capabilities, or through partnerships with FRL Research teams.
  • Balancing and prioritizing resources across the FRL product categories and ensuring optimal support of major design areas in AR, VR, Portal and Wearables.
  • Leading a team of highly skilled analysts across thermal, structural and FA areas.
  • Create and documentation of best-practices and team methodologies, with an emphasis kept on working quickly and collaborating seamlessly.
  • Close work with core technology teams to unblock and unlock new technologies and solutions in product roadmaps.
  • Communication of trade-offs, program concerns and technical direction on FA, structural and thermal topics across and through the greater organization.
  • Creation of metrics, standards and custom tools (as needed) for FA and analysis.
  • Travel up to 15% time domestically (with occasional international travel).
Minimum Qualification
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering other related technical fields, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of product experience leading structural and/or thermal teams that serve a portfolio of products.
  • Experience driving technical solutions in thermal and/or structural solution spaces, on complex products and across several product classes.
  • Experience providing product feedback in addition to technical feedback on engineering and design work.
  • Experience communicating complex technical information and results to executive teams and across organizations.
  • Experience working with partnership teams and external partners, such as contract manufacturers and software providers, at a technical and product level.
Preferred Qualification
  • MS or 10+ years of experience preferred.
  • Experience with wearables, teleconference, virtual and/or augmented reality systems.
  • Experience with structural weight-reduction and associated analysis.
  • Experience with cooling chipsets on mobile and/or laptop products.
  • Experience working with consumer electronics-focused electrical, firmware, mechanical, silicon, wireless, audio and optical teams.
