The Facebook Reality Labs Research Audio Team is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to help bring cutting edge virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences and hardware to life through collaboration and commitment. In our Research & Advanced Development projects, we are setting out to fundamentally transform how people interact with sound, bringing these experiences to the daily lives of billions of people. To make this possible, we need a well-rounded team that fosters collaboration, communication, and is sympathetic to the challenges in these diverse domains.In this role, you will be partnering with engineers and researchers to concept, design, and build wearable audio hardware. You will be collaborating and contributing at a deeply technical level and guiding efforts of team members who will be supporting you, including vendors and manufacturing partners. You will work on miniaturized mechanical systems while considering anthropometric data driven and materials based solutions in order to optimize designs for best performance with regards to size, weight, and comfort needed for the future of AR/VR devices.We are looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, exhibits a sense of ownership, and enjoys an honest and considerate environment. We have a wide variety of problems that need solutions, and we depend on people who are comfortable with embracing a creative, thoughtful approach to both short-term and long-term problem solving.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and validate novel form-factor prototypes
- Utilize anthropometric data to drive wearable designs
- Simulate and measure performance of prototype designs
- Evaluate, develop, and select new materials, technologies, and techniques
- Manage vendors and manufacturing partners to achieve the team’s goals
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 4+ years of experience working in the consumer electronics field
- Experience with ergonomic driven designs using anthropometric data
- Experience with 3D design modeling (NX, SolidWorks, CREO)
- Experience with hands-on prototyping and manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, injection molding, casting, soft goods etc.)
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
- MS in ME, Physics, or equivalent experience
- Experience in personal audio hardware designs
- Experience in wearable consumer electronics
- Experience in statistical analysis
- Experience in failure analysis (both hands-on and analyzing data)
- Experience with a wide variety of materials such as elastomers, thin film composites, or soft goods
