Research Scientist, Energy Materials

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Materials Scientist to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in energy materials for energy generation (harvesting), storage (e.g. batteries or supercapacitors), or dissipation (e.g. thermal interface and barrier materials) and who can work with a team of researchers who are focused on energy systems and integration in wearable electronics. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Develop hypotheses and conduct fundamental experiments to validate or disprove those hypotheses. Contextualize findings in relation to the broader field
  • Identify figures of merit relevant to energetic devices, invent materials and processes that yield flexible devices that exceed the performance of existing technologies along these figures of merit
  • Engage with fabrication teams to build and optimize novel devices and systems for energy storage and generation
  • Collaborate with cross functional researchers in related domains
Minimum Qualification
  • Holds a PhD degree in the field of Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related area or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years experience with materials synthesis and applications development
  • 2+ years experience within the domain of energy materials to include energy generation/harvesting, storage, and/or dissipation or similar areas
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience with thermal electronic generators, triboelectronic generators, piezoelectric generators or hybrid energy recapture devices
  • Experience in transferring research concepts into prototypes, ideally ramping into productization
  • 2+ years of experience in electronic materials, devices, and systems
  • Familiarity with electrical circuit design, voltammetry, thermal analysis, flexible electronic manufacture, or wearable technologies
