Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test future consumer VR and AR experiences. As part of our team, you will develop state of the art human interface prototypes, integrating the latest in sensor technologies and build full proof of concept systems. You will work closely with a team of researchers, architects, and engineers in high level concept planning, documentation and execution. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype, and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product. The chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Drive Mechanical Engineering activities in cross-functional team environment.
  • Apply rigorous engineering to model, build, test, and refine prototypes.
  • Participate on a research team providing advice/guidance/insights to your peers in your area(s) of expertise.
  • Transform ambiguous requests from researchers of varying disciplines and vendor reference designs into working custom solutions.
  • Incubate new technologies into research prototypes.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years experience working on complex ME designs in collaborative, cross functional environments.
  • 3+ years experience working on high-volume consumer products.
  • Experience in 3D design modeling (SolidWorks or NX) and PDM (Teamcenter) and physical prototyping using a variety of prototyping methods.
  • Experience with component/system level modeling and analysis.
  • Experience with a broad range of sensing technologies and components.
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification

  • Familiarity with machine perception techniques.
  • Familiarity with VR/AR systems or wearable technologies.
  • Demonstrates strong aptitude for creative problem solving as both an individual and as a member of a team.
  • Experience working closely with Electrical Engineering, with an understanding of how to prototype and integrate PCBs and electrical assemblies into mechanical systems.
  • Experience in system level bring-up and product test planning (bonus points for integration with Compliance Engineering or industry standard testing).
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary product engineering team, with oversight into mechanical, electrical, and firmware workstreams and integration between disciplines.
