Audio Systems Engineer

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook Reality Labs is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. We aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. We are looking for a talented Audio Systems Engineer to accelerate the progression to authentic social presence in virtual and augmented reality. In our current pipeline, a multitude of sensing components, including image sensors, microphones, speakers and inertial measurement units are installed on the prototype multi-sensor capture systems in order to collect a rich suite of information that reflects the user's physical state, with an emphasis on modality synchronicity and latency minimization; this information is then processed by our state-of-the-art algorithms to allow for a computational representation of the user.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and conduct benchmark performance tests to evaluate the objective and subjective performance of audio-centric prototype systems, applying the end-to-end understanding of hardware and software subsystems
  • Design and implement audio subsystems into large multi-sensor capture systems
Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor's degree in Acoustics, Audio Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering
  • 2+ years of industry experience in audio consumer electronics or audio technology development, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and performing acoustic experiments in controlled laboratory settings
  • 2+ years experience using MATLAB, LabView, Python, JMP or other languages to interface with audio hardware and process data for visualization and analysis
  • Intimate understanding of end-to-end analog and digital signal path in an audio hardware device and its components including transducers, ADC, DSP, DAC, and amplifier
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and performing audio tests in Anechoic environments using audio lab equipment such as Head and Torso Simulators (B&K HATS, GRAS KEMAR), reference microphones, and software such as, Audio Precision testing equipment, SoundCheck, NTi software
  • Experience with MEMS microphone selection and integration into larger audio systems, including acoustic and electrical considerations
Preferred Qualification
  • 5+ years of industry experience in audio consumer electronics or audio technology development, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience of shipping audio consumer electronic devices as a systems engineer
  • Proficiency in DSP fundamentals and concepts that are commonly encountered in real-time audio algorithms such as ANC, noise suppression, echo cancellation, EQ, speaker protection, and beamformer
  • Demonstrated experience of implementing testing models on Simulink RealTime, AudioWeaver, or MaxMSP
  • Demonstrated experience in bringing up evaluation boards and testing platforms
  • Interpersonal skills and experience working in a cross-functional and inter-disciplinary team to tackle research problems
