Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Reality Labs is looking for interns with expertise in design, modeling and simulations, and/or testing and instrumentation systems to help us invent technologies for enhanced user experiences in digital worlds. Specifically, we are seeking candidates who have a good understanding of actuation physics, develop novel hardware technologies for haptics, understand response characteristics and control techniques of materials and structures for IO applications in ARVR. In this role, you will work with world-leading collaborators to improve our understanding of actuator technology, transmissions through materials and structures and design of devices in handhelds and/or wearable spaces and pave the way to the next generation of virtual and augmented reality technologies. This internship is twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute cutting-edge research to advance AR/VR hardware technologies for actuation and sensing, and efficient designs of multi-modal systems.
- Develop and realize research prototypes and test them in AR/VR scenarios.
- Collaborate with other researchers, engineers, and user experience researchers to prototype hardware and software solutions and run experiments to advance the project.
- Work with leading academic researchers in the field. The work should result in publishable research that appears in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences.
Minimum Qualification
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in mechanical engineering, materials, soft robotics, or related field.
- Research skills involving defining problems, exploring solutions, and analyzing and presenting results.
- Simulation background in materials and acoustics using ANSYS, Matlab, Open-source FEM/BEM solver.
- Proficiency in C++/C#, Matlab, and/or Python.
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification
- Experience with actuation technologies and wave propagation through different mediums.
- Experience with optimizing structures and designing acoustic metamaterials.
- Practical and experimentation experience with acoustic and vibrational/force test setups.
- Experience with design and simulation, and use of CAD tools is a plus.
- Ability to 3D print and work in machine shop with low supervision.
- Familiarity with numerical simulation of electrical-mechanical coupled problems.
- Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
