Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Facebook Reality Labs is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. We aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. FRLR is looking for a talented Electrical Engineer to accelerate the progression to authentic social presence in virtual reality. In our current pipeline, a multitude of sensing components, including image sensors, microphones, and inertial measurement units are installed on the headset prototypes in order to collect a rich suite of information that reflects the user's physical state, with an emphasis on modality synchronicity and latency minimization; this information is then processed by our state-of-the-art algorithms to allow for a computational representation of the user. The ideal candidate for this position will be experienced in circuit simulation and modeling, schematics capture, and layout design involving high-speed digital systems and programmable logic, as well as the use of multi-GHz digital test equipment; a working knowledge of industry-standard differential signaling and communication protocols would also be crucial. You will work in a dynamic cross-functional team including electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as design and research experts. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Responsibilities
- Design electrical engineering solutions for novel VR/AR devices and systems
- Establish and conduct collaborations with internal and external technology partners and vendors
- Co-lead the engineering of large and complex multidisciplinary hardware projects
- Discover new trends and solutions in high speed interconnects, such as those based on MIPI, USB, PCIe, and Ethernet
- Apply novel engineering solution to challenging power/size/thermal requirements
- Contribute hands-on to developing schematics, guiding board layout, assembly, testing, debugging, and integration of multi-component electrical systems, as well as implementing RTL for programmable logic
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years of industry experience in hardware design and electrical engineering roles
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and working highly independently while managing priorities
- Experience rapidly prototyping hardware solutions to enable fast research iterations
- Experience accommodating a high degree of ambiguity, scope change and flexibility
- Experience with low and high speed communication interfaces, such as MIPI, USB, PCIe, I2C, UART, SPI, and I2S
- Experience with debugging high-speed digital systems
- Experience with schematic and board design using Cadence OrCAD, Altium, or equivalent, targeting HDI design
- Experience with use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, function generators, and other digital test equipment. Practical experience of measuring/analyzing multi-GHz signals
Preferred Qualification
- MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience in research or advanced development
- Experience with sensors, such as cameras, lidars, proximity sensors, microphones, IMUs, and depth sensors
- Experience collaborating effectively and rapidly outside of core technical specialty. Capable of using engineering intuition to go fast without making mistakes
- Experience owning research hardware engineering design and executions tasks
- Experience with designing hardware systems for computer vision applications
- Experience of designing electrical systems with very hard power, weight, thermal and compute constraints
- Experience with battery-powered low-power systems
- Proven experience of designing consumer products
