Research Engineer, Display and Optics

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook Reality Labs is the world leader in the design of virtual and augmented reality systems. Come work alongside expert engineers and research scientists to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. Understanding the user is at the center of our research, as it informs our work in displays, optics, rendering and practically all components of an AR/VR system. As a Research Engineer on the Applied Perception Science team at Facebook Reality Labs, you will be tackling the scientific challenges that will help define the future of AR/VR. We are currently seeking an innovative and self-motivated Research Engineer to join us in pushing forward the state-of-the-art in wearability and anthropometry by providing data science support (statistical analysis) for one large project involving 3D geometry data. In addition to working in a dynamic cross-functional environment with researchers within the Display and Optics organization, this role offers opportunities to collaborate closely across the Facebook Reality Labs org. An ideal candidate would be able to combine multiple 3D geometry datasets, create automated data analysis pipelines and machine learning algorithms to derive insights into anthropometric questions. The work will require close collaborations with cross-functional teams to inform models that estimate relevant parameters from geometric data.

Responsibilities
  • Examine, analyze, and produce meaningful information from anthropometrics datasets with a core responsibility of working with 3D geometry data.
  • Build and improve data analysis pipelines with an emphasis on scalability and stability of various deployed systems.
  • Create and maintain code for data analysis pipelines in C++, Python, R or equivalent. Plan for and execute on statistical analysis for a large data set of participant data (N=5000+ people, potentially hundreds of data points per person).
  • Combine with multiple sources of heterogeneous data to derive most meaningful conclusions.
  • Expand our database capabilities in consultation with a database engineer.
  • Conceive proof-of-concept experiments to establish data accuracy requirements.
  • Work cross-functional partners to translate their research questions to analysis tools and results.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and engineers across teams at Facebook to develop experiments and metrics that advance the state-of-the-art in AR/VR systems.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams for data collection, data processing and analysis.
  • Present regularly to large cross-functional teams and communicate progress.
Minimum Qualification
  • Master’s Degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related field) or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with quantitative analysis including experience with SQL, other programming languages (e.g, Python) or statistical/mathematical software (e.g., R, SAS, MATLAB).
  • 5+ years of experience in applied research and/or product development related to 3D geometry (i.e. can do PCA on meshes).
  • 5+ years of experience with several of the following: multivariate analysis approaches, principal components analysis, independent components analysis, hierarchical regression modeling, non-linear regression and modeling, machine learning approaches.
  • Experience working, communicating, and collaborating in a cross-disciplinary and cross-functional environment.
Preferred Qualification
  • PhD or equivalent work experience in quantitative field.
  • 7+ years of experience doing complex quantitative analysis and working with distributed (i.e. Hive, Hadoop or similar databases) or highly complex datasets.
  • 7+ years of experience in applied research and/or product development related to 3D reconstruction and/or 3D geometry and in particular applications for face scanning and annotation.
  • Experience and understanding of large database infrastructure (SQL).
  • Experience with mesh data processing, noisey data surface extraction, deformable mesh data processing, parametric surface extraction, and data set (point cloud or mesh) to data set alignment and comparison.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: grants, fellowships, patents, or at leading workshops or conferences such as CVPR, ECCV/ICCV, SIGGRAPH or similar.
