Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to work with a broad range of multidisciplinary research to advance the state of the art of AR/VR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience technically leading a group of mechanical engineers and developing designs for wearable devices while considering a broad range of hardware requirements including materials, manufacturability, form factor, ergonomics, and integration of technologies on soft goods substrates. The candidate should be able to explore novel ideas through concept feasibility studies, fast and interactive prototyping, and use of CAD tools for architectural development and analytical modeling. The candidate will work with a team of researchers and engineers who are focused on haptics, sensor fusion, novel materials, and AR/VR-specific human-computer-interface paradigms. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead Mechanical Engineering workstreams for sensor and actuator integration onto soft goods substrates for wearable hardware
- Partner with cross-functional researchers and engineers to develop wearable architectures for AR/VR interaction
- Work across full product development cycle to deliver robust mechanical designs from concept to production
- Manage internal and external resources to provide technical direction of mechanical engineering workstreams and owning the delivery of outputs on schedule
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’ Degree in Mechanical Engineering or comparable experience
- 7+ years of experience working on complex ME designs, leading and organizing a highly cross functional team
- Demonstrated experience with 3D CAD design modeling (SolidWorks, NX, or equivalent)
- 3+ years experience leading or managing a team of Mechanical Engineers through concept development and prototype execution and managing project priorities
- Demonstrated experience providing technical mentorship to growing team
Preferred Qualification
- 5+ years experience working with a variety of materials including textiles, elastomers, thermoplastics, and thin film composites
- 3+ years experience with a wide range of manufacturing processes including injection/overmolding, machining, casting, laser cutting, sewing, and knitting
- Demonstrated experience scaling novel manufacturing methods from low to high volumes
- Demonstrated experience developing designed experiments (DOEs) to frame solution space constraints
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing cross functional processes to drive engineering rigor
