Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
The Platform Architect (Display & Optics) is responsible for developing novel display and optics solutions for FRL’s evolving AR and VR products and will work with the product team to understand and influence their product roadmap. This person will need to be able to sort through conflicting and ambiguous goals in order to properly set scope and establish a coherent list of priorities that deliver the results best matched to product strategy, user experiences and roadmap of north star type of goals. They will work across Facebook leadership, engineering and the product pathfinding team to drive more company-level certainty for AR and VR systems. Once a product architecture is agreed, the Platform Architect (Display & Optics) will work with the various technology teams to develop the display submodules that will support this larger vision. This would mean display development that incorporates the larger system, i.e. eye tracking, accommodation, and prescription correction, as system fundamentals from the very early trades. This means supporting various product form factor and non-form factor prototypes that can get to full system integration earlier as opposed to development of single technological pillars that need to intersect later.
Responsibilities
- Work at the intersection of research, development and product in order to develop display architectures for future AR & VR products
- Work closely with the product management team to develop/influence architectures that support product roadmap and targeted experiences
- Work across technology teams and form external partnerships to develop display architectures that inherently support the feature roadmap
- Take the display architecture from early concept development and trades to prototype builds to requirement development (PRD) to development of a manufacturing path
- Clearly communicate the development path during all phases with cross functional partners and executive teams
Minimum Qualification
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, Computer Science or related fields
- 5+ years of experience in system architecture and design
- Experience in managing the trade-offs necessary to deliver world-class consumer, industrial, or commercial, products with a significant display/optics component
- Proven knowledge working with PMs to transition systems from the labs into product maturation
- Experience presenting to upper-level management and decision makers
- Experience collaborating across a wide range of people, i.e. leadership, product managers, engineering, research, user experiences to deliver a balanced system
- Experience self directing in a fast-paced environment with limited oversight
Preferred Qualification
- 10+ years of experience in research or advanced optics development including knowledge in displays, sensors, cameras, machine learning, modeling and simulation, requirements development and flow down
- 7+ years of experience in display focused system architecture and design
- Experience with challenges associated with system level integration which encompasses, display, optics, electronics, software, computer vision and platform development
- Experience with display calibration and system level metrology required to stand up new display systems as well as associated algorithms and devices
- Experience with image quality metrics required for quality display and identifying pitfalls present in new types of displays systems
- Demonstrated experience translating user experience and perceptual science targets into hardware
- Experience transitioning from development projects into larger scale product launches
- Demonstrated experience identifying and partnering with outside companies in developing new manufacturing techniques across a broad range of display challenges
- Experience with design/manufacturing of small form-factor display or imaging systems
