Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Thermal Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to work with a broad range of multidisciplinary research to advance the state of the art of AR/VR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in developing system level thermal architectures for wearable devices while considering a broad range of hardware requirements including power systems, novel materials, sensors/actuators/display integrations, and reliability performance. This candidate should be able to explore novel ideas and assess thermal architecture concept feasibility through the use of analytical modeling and fast and iterative prototyping. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Responsibilities
- Applying disciplines of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and a fluid mechanics to lead the development of thermal system architecture for wearable devices
- Develop analytical thermal models considering power budgets and subsystem energy requirements. Conduct thermal simulations using CFD tools
- Specify thermal components, develop prototypes, and conduct empirical testing to validate thermal models
- Drive novel thermal technology roadmaps with cross-functional teams
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, other related technical field or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of experience working on developing thermal architectures for electro-mechanical devices
- Demonstrated experience leading multiple engineering efforts across R&D programs in both strategy and execution
- Demonstrated experience using 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks/NX) to develop detail designs for thermal components and architectures. Drive simulations of thermal designs using CFD tools (Ansys/Flotherm)
- Demonstrated experience leading external laboratories and contract manufacturers in test plan development and test execution
Preferred Qualification
- Demonstrated experience developing thermal solutions for small form factor wearable devices
- Demonstrated experience developing thermal solutions with a wide variety of components and materials such as aerogels, thin film heat spreaders, phase change materials, and other compliant materials
- Demonstrated experience growing an engineering team, raising the skill level of the team through their leadership
