Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers to build the future of connection within virtual and augmented reality. We're developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses.
The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at FRL-R is a new generation of end-to-end real-time 3D scene understanding systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, computer vision, large-scale reconstruction and localization, as well as large-scale online inference and optimization. We aim to provide a contextual layer to the real world via indexing all “things” and “stuff” an observer views, and eventually connecting that to personal and world knowledge graphs.
The Surreal team is seeking an experienced Research Scientist Manager to lead and support a group of world-class researchers in order to work on project Aria and to support this initiative.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support a team of research scientists to plan, scope, and execute high impact research projects for computer vision, machine learning, and contextual AI algorithms.
- Partner with Research Program Management in developing a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategy.
- Be both a technical leader and people manager.
- Communicate cross-functionally and drive research internal and external collaborations, managing partner engagement and building future opportunities.
- Partner closely with Facebook internal partner teams to create shared roadmaps towards long-term product impact.
- Communicate strategy, project objectives and reasoning to the team leadership.
- Perform risk analysis, critical path determination and resource allocation in managing research projects towards successful outcomes.
Minimum Qualification
- Ph.D. in scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years experience of hands-on technical and research scientist management.
- 2+ years of expertise using modern deep learning-based techniques, and familiarity with a major deep learning library (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Jax, etc.).
- Experience in one or more of the following domains: Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Computer vision, and Augmented Reality.
- Leadership experience driving high risk, high reward projects scientifically, including managing a team of research scientists and communicating to leadership.
- Demonstrated experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance management.
- Leadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, drive best practices, and mentor team members.
Preferred Qualification
- 5+ years of people management experience of research scientists.
- Experience seeking and hiring world class talent, etc.
- Experience managing research teams and projects in Computer Vision, 3D Machine perception or Virtual/Augmented Reality technologies from conception to end.
- Experience managing joint hardware-software research development and associated rapid prototyping projects.
- Track record of publications at top-tier CV, ML, and/or AI conferences such as: NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, SysML.
