What You Will Do

Join our world-class software development team! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a Unity Developer to join the Visible Team making animations and visualization solutions for a broad range of applications. The selected candidate will work to support the development and maintenance of institutional and departmental VISIBLE Team applications.The selected candidate will be assigned to various projects based off the needs of the organization and at the discretion of SAE-1 management.

Software Developer 1 ($64,400 - $102,300)

The selected candidate will work as a Unity developer to support the development and maintenance of institutional and departmental applications.The selected candidate will be assigned to various projects based off the needs of the organization and at the discretion of SAE-1 management. Additionally, the qualified candidate will be a self-starter and obtain the ability to operate in a highly dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate and prototype new concepts in virtual and augmented reality spaces
  • Assess, develop, debug, maintain, and set code standards
  • Work closely with the designers; creating tools and processes to facilitate the development
  • Work with existing frameworks, developing new frameworks and functional specifications
  • Implement UI screens and optimizing performance
  • Implementing game features and related systems
  • Proactive and able to take ownership of tasks and projects
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Knowledge
  • OOP design skills (C# a plus)
  • Solid Unity development experience
  • A solid understanding of core Unity concepts with a knowledge of the Unity 3D editor and management of project assets
  • Experience in conceptualizing, prototyping and developing games and interactive presentations
  • Exceptional problem-solving and debugging skills
Software Life Cycle

Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation.

Collaboration

We are looking for someone who can work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group. In addition, you must have effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.

Innovation

This position will require you to research new technologies and tools and incorporate their usage into new products and services.

Time Management

You should have strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously.

Clearance

This position requires Q clearance access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience

This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline such as Bachelor of Arts with a focus in Media Arts, Creative Media or Game Design, preferred.

Desired Skills
  • Experience with databases, mobile app development, and source control systems
  • Shader writing experience (HLSL or Shader Forge/Node Editor)
  • Working knowledge of augmented reality concepts and solutions
  • Experience consuming and authoring REST services
  • Experience using configuration management tools like GiT, SVN, TFS, etc.
  • Experience implementing other emergent technologies, such as computer vision or machine learning into AR presentations
  • Basic knowledge of Maya
  • Basic knowledge of Java and JavaScript
  • Enthusiastic about gaming culture
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into a working and maintainable solution
  • Defining and implementing high performance Unity based applications
  • Be results-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with Agile (Scrum) methodologies
  • Experience using JIRA/Confluence sites for the application lifecycle management
  • Experience gathering or generating technical requirements and creating designs based on those
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
