Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

At Facebook Reality Labs, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing, modeling, and prototyping advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team. We are seeking a full-time researcher with expertise in electro-optic device design, fabrication, and testing. The candidate will have a track record in active photonics and functional component technologies and will work closely with our team of researchers and engineers on fabrication and packaging technologies. Candidates must possess a fundamental understanding of integrated lasers, photodetectors and modulators of photonic integrated circuit and industrial fabrication and packaging. Specifically, candidates should have experience in the fabrication of active PIC components in CMOS compatible foundries and/or research grade labs. The ideal candidate would demonstrate possessing a deep understanding of the typical integration flow required to fabricated highly integrated electrical and optical circuits.

Responsibilities
  • Explore applications of photonic modules for next generation AR/VR display and sensing prototypes with an emphasis on both new functionality and new concepts.
  • Develop new designs of functional active photonic integrated circuit components, systems and interfaces with different optical channels, etc.
  • Conduct performance analysis and comparison of different approaches/designs with respect to key figures of merit.
  • Collaborate with the larger FRL team and provide creative solutions for display, imaging and sensing technologies.
  • Build collaborative relationships both internally and externally to support product development and research initiatives.
Minimum Qualification
  • PhD degree in the field of Physics, Optical Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Experience with numerical studies on integrated photonics, micro/nano-optics, etc. with demonstrated experience designing active photonic devices such as photonic integrated lasers, photodectors, modulators, etc.
  • Experience in traditional CMOS processes and integration flows
  • Experience with test automation and DOE tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB or JMP
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
Preferred Qualification
  • Demonstrated experience with integrated lasers and photodetectors for PIC in past research projects or work experience
  • Experience with photonic design tape out and work with foundry
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuit packaging
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications
