Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Team located in Redmond; WA is continuing to revolutionize consumer electronic devices. We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Optical Engineer to join our Mixed Reality Architecture Team. The team is responsible for Product Architecture, Systems Architecture, Prototyping & Incubation as well as defining and driving the various technology roadmaps that are crucial to the future of Mixed Reality at Microsoft.

The position is for an Optical Engineer to support the development of display and sensor solutions for AR. You will be leveraging your background expertise to define the strategy and lead various initiatives to develops and implements technical solutions to complex quality and design challenges and applies lessons learned to recommend future focused solutions. You will be responsible for independently developing first principle models of imaging and illumination systems defining, developing advanced prototype components for complex hardware, and creating innovative, robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and verification plans for the hardware. This position is within a highly skilled team of hardware and software engineers. The work is in a collaborative team environment, so the ability to communicate well with other team members and to support overall team goals are crucial.

Responsibilities
  • Creates innovative, robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and verification plans for the hardware engineering aspects of complex products or feature areas. Implements the flow down requirements (e.g., weight, size, power) provided.
  • Develops and implements technical solutions to complex quality and design challenges and applies lessons learned to recommend future focused solutions.
  • Independently develops first principle models of imaging and illumination systems which may use existing modeling software to analyze simulated performance of complex features of these systems; reviews models produced by other engineers.
  • Reviews documentation to help ensure that the appropriate test requirements and improvements are included in relevant hardware designs and specifications by applying an understanding of how complex features or products work under a variety of customer scenarios.
  • Creates new verification plans and anticipates the types of test equipment required for measuring features of new product technology. Calibrates test equipment and aids in the development of new, specialized test equipment as needed for testing new or unique hardware.
  • Identifies new tools, test methodologies, and best practices for creating test cases that include elements such as success metrics and tracking systems. Communicates limitations of the testing method through established test quality metrics.
  • Develops, reviews, and executes test plans for complex feature areas or products.
  • Advises engineering teams in how to set up and break down testing benches and documenting test performance.
  • Reviews and interprets collected testing data to aid and support root cause failure analysis, design modifications and the development of automated testing solutions for ensuring high quality.
  • Creates traceability requirements for test database. Outlines requirements for dashboards and reports for testing and quality metrics.
  • Uses data and statistical analysis to identify highly complex problems or flaws that may affect a range of features or product design changes. Identifies possible solutions to novel and complex problems.
  • Uses root cause analysis to identify highly complex problems or flaws that may affect a range of features or product design changes. Identifies possible solutions to novel and complex problems.
  • Develops advanced prototype components for complex hardware for use in validation of new product features; provides guidance to other engineers in developing innovative features.
  • Generates a single project implementation schedule, monitors performance against schedules, and helps determine resource dependencies for the hardware engineering aspects of complex features or products. Guides other engineers on performance monitoring and schedule implementation.
  • Facilitates resolution of design issues, identifies recurring issues, and makes recommendations for necessary design changes and design tradeoffs (e.g., extendibility or refurbishing) for multiple products.
  • Researches new tools, technologies, or methods and implements change. Provides recommendations to project team members as to which tools are appropriate .
  • Communicates project progress and status within and external to the project team (e.g., to customers and partners), escalating issues as necessary.
  • Writes customized reports and functional specifications for an established product or product feature, based on information from product development and verification processes. Reviews and provides feedback on other engineers' documentation.
  • Documents complex details about materials, components, and/or functionality for complex devices via accepted release processes and highlights potential compatibility, safety, and compliance issues. Accurately records and tracks changes to designs following established processes and provides guidance to other engineers documenting these details.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience
  • AR/VR/MR product development experience
  • Experience in Image Processing
  • Strong problem-solving skills and passion to solve hard problems as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong customer focus with ability to work effectively across multiple businesses and technical teams to ensure continued customer happiness
  • Demonstrated cross-functional and cross-org experience
  • A high tolerance for ambiguity and change
  • Good knowledge of the first order optical principles
  • Proficient in Matlab/Python
  • Experience with optical modeling software such as Zemax/CodeV/Fred/Lighttools
  • Experience in Physical optics
