At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a Material Science Research Group Lead with experience in growing and developing a diverse research & engineering team responsible for designing & building materials to desired properties and developing processes into manufacturing workflows. You will work within multidisciplinary teams to define technology development and execution plans, and help define the roadmap for soft materials and flexible/stretchable electronics manufacturing research. This role provides ample opportunities to work alongside research scientists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, electrical engineers, and software engineers to create the technologies that will usher in a new era of human-machine interactions that will make VR/AR pervasive and universal. Responsibilities
  • Grow and develop a team of researchers and engineers towards applying high level of expertise in material science and flexible/stretchable electronics to solve research science and engineering problems
  • Influence research, technical direction and goals of cross-functional teams by implementing strategies and provide technical leadership
  • Empower individuals on the team to define, develop and execute research plans and activities
  • Describe complex features and systems in detail and communicate technical information effectively to cross functional teams
  • Drive and scope work towards applying abstract principles to solving problems and identify solutions & opportunities within the technology space
Minimum Qualification
  • 8+ years of experience with leading a team of individuals working on formulating polymer structure to mechanical/electrical properties, including polymer mechanics, electrical conductivity, melt and solution based rheology, viscoelasticity, and knowledge of the characterization techniques to elucidate such properties
  • Experience with the design of functional materials including polymer composites with knowledge of the roles of interfacial and surface chemistry on these materials
  • Experience with developing functional materials including photopolymers, photoacids, and photobases with an emphasis on designing elastomers to desired properties
  • Knowledge of patterning technologies including additive/subtractive fabrication processes and experience with developing new ways of manufacturing with silicone and other polymers
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, macromolecular science or related areas
Preferred Qualification
  • Track record of solving a significant research engineering or research science problem and/or having the sole responsibility/accountability of a technology path or vector with measurable outcomes
