Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook Reality Labs Research is looking for motivated researchers to help create the next generation of virtual reality. Our research focuses on finding comprehensive solutions to complex tracking problems, delivering novel technologies and algorithms fundamental to future VR systems. You’ll have a unique opportunity to collaborate with industry-leading researchers and engineers who are defining the future of VR and AR.

Our team is looking for candidates with expertise in ultrasound/acoustics system design, simulation, signal processing, instrumentation, and characterization to help with the development of novel sensor architectures within the Eye Tracking Research Team, while collaborating with experts across multiple domains.

Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with other researchers and engineers across both hardware and research teams at Facebook to develop ultrasound/acoustics-based tracking systems that advance the state-of-the-art for eye tracking sensing
  • Simulate fast time-domain acoustic and ultrasound waves in complex and tissue-realistic media
  • May work with the team on instrumentation and characterization of ultrasound/acoustics devices
  • Propose and implement design improvements for tracking systems using ultrasound/acoustics devices
  • Develop algorithms to extract accurate signals that are robust to noise artifacts
Minimum Qualification
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of Ultrasound, Acoustics, or related field
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
  • Experience with conventional Ultrasound/Acoustics design and simulation techniques
  • Hands-on experience working with ultrasound/acoustic device instrumentation and characterization
  • Proficiency in bring-up, debug, and testing of ultrasound/acoustic devices using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers
  • Experience coding in C++, MATLAB, or Python
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and signal processing chains and sensor signal conditioning
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
Preferred Qualification
  • Familiarity with ultrasound transducer design
  • Experience with 3D position and motion tracking techniques
  • Strong background in analog and digital signal processing algorithms
  • Familiarity with Time of Flight (ToF) and other depth sensing techniques
  • Experience with 2D or 3D Finite Volume simulation software such as COMSOL, MATLAB, or ANSYS
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as IEEE MEMS, Transducers Conference, Hilton Head Workshop, IEEE Sensors and IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium
