Optical Coating Scientist

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

At Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R), our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that ship in five to ten years. Come work alongside world leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are seeking innovative scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical coatings to lead development of high-performance uniform and patterned optical coatings for the next generation of optical devices and materials. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in optical engineering, physics, or similar areas, and a strong background in optical coating materials, process technologies, and applications. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team.

Responsibilities
  • Design and fabricate narrow and broad bandpass filters, broadband reflective coatings, dual band filters, wide-angle blocking filters, polarization coatings, transparent conductive oxide coatings, metal coatings, and hard coats.
  • Lead working through others coating deposition and application technologies including PVD sputtering, e-beam evaporation, ion-assisted deposition, low temperature coatings, spin coating, spray coating, batch, and roll-to-roll coating.
  • Balance technical contributions while mentoring and collaborating with others.
  • Work in complex design space where trade-offs are required due to system constraints.
  • Work within a cross-functional team to understand requirements, develop approaches with materials and coatings, and evaluate performance.
  • Measure and optimize coating performance as prepared and in application.
Minimum Qualification
  • PhD degree in Optics, Physics, Material Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years experience technical lead of an optical coating technology development effort.
  • Experience working with coating partners. The successful candidate should be able to use contacts to develop engagements and to guide the team to the most appropriate partners.
  • Background in thin film characterizations, dry thin film coating: i.e. sputtering, e-beam evaporation, thermal evaporation, chemical vapor deposition, ion assisted deposition, low temperature coating, and solvent coating.
  • Experience in a number of different coatings: i.e. narrow bandpass filters, broadband visible coatings, infrared cut filters, dual band filters, wide angle blocking filters, polarization coatings, conductive coatings, hard coats on inorganic as well as organic films or substrates.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment working on multiple projects with minimal and changing direction. Proven English skills.
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification
  • 10+ years experience in optical coating design and process development.
  • Demonstrated leading experience of a significant coating effort that could include building coating capabilities from scratch.
  • Background in coating durability testing and development of hard coatings.
  • Experience getting coatings into mass production at domestic and international suppliers on plastic substrates.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by product launches, grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as Applied Optics, Optics Letters, Optics Express, and relevant SIGGRAPH, SID, OSA, SPIE or similar.
