At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Battery Research Manager to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in prototype battery design and testing, advanced energy storage materials, and who can work with a team of researchers who are developing and screening advanced energy storage cells. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate academic and corporate development efforts in energy storage technologies including novel electrodes, cell chemistries, unique form factors and integration compatibility, and novel packaging techniques.
- Evaluate startups and perform due diligence on technology, manufacturing, scalability and cost.
- Develop specifications and qualification methods for cell performance and reliability.
- Evaluate emerging cell technologies, suitability for consumer electronics applications, and timelines for commercial introduction.
- Work with external partners to demonstrate and accelerate new technology introduction.
- Work with system integrators to understand product needs and drive partner technology partner roadmaps to support FRL products.
- Oversee and coordinate external cell development engagements including participating in drafting specifications, periodic reviews, and screening and benchmarking delivered cells.
- Manage and oversee the design, buildout, and sustained operations of several battery cell testing labs at multiple sites as well as establishing a prototype cell pilot manufacturing lab.
- Detailed reports communicating analysis and periodic updates to a diverse audience of subject matter experts, executives and cross functional stakeholders in sourcing, reliability and manufacturing.
Minimum Qualification
- PhD degree in the field of Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or related area.
- 10+ years experience with battery cell development, testing, and evaluation.
- Experience with Li-ion battery cell development.
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in the domain of energy storage devices and materials.
- Experience in developing and screening battery technology for consumer electronics applications, preferably for wearable electronics.
- Strong communication and personal management skills.
- 5+ years of experience in establishing and operating battery prototyping and evaluation facilities.
- Familiarity with semiconductor, packaging, panel, and/or roll-to-roll fabrication techniques.
