Materials Scientist, Material Growth

Employer

Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Materials Scientist to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in crystal growth and characterization, thin-film deposition and fabrication processes and who can work with a team of researchers who are developing power sources for the next generation of wearable electronics. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Manage materials growth operations, including precursor and substrate selection and management, development and optimization of deposition processes, materials characterization, and subsequent processes as needed for specified applications. Establish best known methods (BKMs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for a myriad of deposition systems.
  • Model superlattice growth parameters, develop target specifications and characterize film stacks through a variety of validation methodologies and optimize materials performance based on application specific requirements.
  • Engage with cross-functional team of researchers and engineers to build out prototype devices and systems.
Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or related area or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years experience in crystal material growth and characterization
  • Experience with troubleshooting and resolving material growth and equipment challenges
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
  • PhD degree in the field of Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or related area, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience in crystallography and materials characterization techniques
  • 2+ years of experience in growth of high quality crystalline materials for research or consumer product applications
  • Demonstrated experience in the growth and characterization of superlattice structures and chalcogenide materials
