Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R) brings together a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers to create the future of augmented and virtual reality. The FRL-R Tools & Infra team bridges the gap between the needs of scientists and our existing Facebook toolsets and backend infrastructure. The team’s mission is to turbocharge the software engineers and research scientists building the AR/VR technology of the future.

As a Software Engineering Manager for Tools & Infra, you will support your team members and help them realize their goals and aspirations. You will hire diverse talent and grow the team. You will build partnerships and trust with many other teams across Facebook.

Responsibilities
  • Work in concert with research software engineers to understand their software tool pain points, prioritize solutions and create the systems and tools that improve their workflows and turbocharge the research.
  • Coordinate with a large set of internal infrastructure and tool teams across the lab and across Facebook to evaluate and integrate with existing systems.
  • Create career development plans and manage the performance of software engineers working on tools and infrastructure.
  • Build, nurture and lead a healthy team by providing guidance, mentorship and support to software engineers.
  • Perform architectural, design and code reviews that improve software engineering and enable more efficient and effective research.
  • Build a community of researchers and developers by sharing software engineering best practices, tips and techniques.
  • Collaborate in a diverse team environment across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver software solutions.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years experience creating tools used by other software professionals, such as compilers, version control systems, build systems, continuous integration tools, code editors or linters.
  • 5+ years experience managing software engineers.
  • 3+ years experience administering, extending, integrating and maintaining version control systems, build systems or continuous integration systems.
  • 3+ years experience working with multi-disciplinary teams and bringing people together to create solutions.
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience with Windows or Linux system administration.
  • Experience shipping one or more products on large code bases that span a range of platforms and tools.
  • Experience with one or more high level languages such as Python, JavaScript, Perl, Bash or PowerShell.
  • C/C++ experience, including C++11 (and up) features and principles.
  • Experience in game engines such as Unreal or Unity.
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or cuDNN.
