Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. We aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people can interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions.
We are looking for a Tech Lead Manager, Electrical Engineering. The ideal candidate will have a background and hands-on experience in electrical engineering with experience in circuit simulation and modeling, schematics capture, and layout design involving high-speed digital systems and programmable logic, as well as the use of multi-GHz test equipment; a working knowledge of differential signal and communication protocols would also be crucial. As the Electrical Engineering TLM, you will be in charge of building up a small team of electrical engineers as well as defining and implementing a workflow for the development of the next generation of research hardware systems that enable social VR and AR.
You will be responsible for the intake of requirements from researchers and engineers, work with TPM’s to manage program schedules, identify risks and associated mitigation plans, and clearly communicate to program stakeholders. Communication and technical aptitude are critical in this role as you will be the liaison between researchers, operations teams, mechanical and software engineers and you will assist with determining project priority and feasibility.
As an expert in your engineering field you will be in charge of defining electrical architectures and interfaces used by the lab, own the EE design review process, and play a critical role in the electromechanical integration efforts on our programs.
This is an intellectually complex and operationally challenging role that will afford the opportunity to lead the development of technologies that have the potential to change the way humans communicate and interact regardless of distance.
Responsibilities
- Inspire & lead the electrical engineering efforts of the lab.
- Mentor & develop a small team of electrical engineers.
- Coordinate with key partners (Research, Engineering, Leadership, Operations, Legal, Facilities, etc.) to support new and ongoing projects.
- Manage project meetings, schedules, milestones and delivery.
- Design, simulate, prototype, and test virtual and augmented reality systems which combine electronics, mechanics, optics and software.
- Provide individual technical contributions in your area of expertise.
- Effectively influence leaders and key partners to gain alignment.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of experience as an electrical engineer working across one or more of the following areas: robotics, sensor systems, consumer devices.
- 3+ years of experience managing hardware teams.
- Leadership experience in leading individuals and facilitating teams to find solutions to problems.
- Experience leading and driving electrical design development from schematic capture, PCB layout through assembly.
- Experience with low and high speed communication interfaces, such as MIPI, USB, Ethernet, PCIe, I2C, UART, SPI, and I2S.
- Experience with circuit simulations and modeling (e.g. SPICE).
- Experience with bringing up and debugging high-speed digital systems.
- Experience with schematic and board design using Cadence OrCAD, Altium, or equivalent, targeting HDI design.
- Demonstrated domain knowledge in compute & systems development, proven track record in building technology & product development.
Preferred Qualification
- Experience with embedded computing and wearable devices.
- Direct experience shipping consumer hardware and in R&D.
- Experience with sensors, such as cameras, lidars, proximity sensors, microphones, IMUs, and depth sensors.
- Experience integrating RF technologies such as WIFI, BT, GPS, etc.
- Experience of designing electrical systems with very hard power, weight, thermal and compute constraints.
- Experience working with and integrating appropriate FPGA solutions into systems that also include microcontrollers and/or microprocessors.
- Experience in working with CM & EMS partners in the design, manufacture, testing and delivery of next generation hardware solutions.
