AR/VR Power Modeling Engineer

Employer

Job Description

Company:Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Job Area:Engineering Group, Engineering Group > Multimedia Systems

General Summary

Designs and develops technologies related to the generation or manipulation of content targeted at the human senses or machine perception. These technologies include speech, audio, imaging, computer vision, display, sensing, biometrics, and augmented/virtual reality. Analyzes use cases related to multimedia technologies and performs functional decomposition to drive requirements for implementation into hardware or software. Performs system analysis and uses simulation modeling to propose algorithmic or system modifications that enable optimization of performance and power.

The Responsibilities Of This Role Include
  • Working independently with little supervision.
  • Providing some supervision/guidance to others.
  • Making decisions that are moderate in impact; errors may have relatively minor financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships; errors may require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct.
  • Using verbal and written communication skills to convey information that may be somewhat complex to others who may have limited knowledge of the subject in question. May require basic negotiation and influence, cooperation, tact, and diplomacy, etc.
  • Working within prescribed budget and resources.
  • Having a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to provide input on key decisions).
  • Completing most tasks with multiple steps which can be performed in various orders; some planning and prioritization must occur to complete the tasks effectively; mistakes may result in some rework.
  • Exercising substantial creativity to innovate new processes, procedures, or work products within guidelines or to achieve established objectives.
  • Using deductive and inductive problem solving; multiple approaches may be taken/necessary to solve the problem; often information is missing or incomplete; advanced data analysis/interpretation skills may be required.
  • Occasionally participating in strategic planning within own area affecting immediate operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Independently designs or reviews others' systems-level software and hardware design; shares use-case scenario for the market; identifies issues related to accuracy or reliability of design for large projects; weighs tradeoff against defined customer requirements and identifies solutions; provides guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Leads design reviews for subsystem development; evaluates impact of system performance based on constraints and/or capabilities; works outside domain to support design integrity.
  • Collaborates and helps cross-functional teams (e.g., Hardware Designers, Software Engineers, Automotive, Biometrics) to design products that meet internal and/or external customer requirements and standards.
  • Develops test environments and comprehensive test plans to test code or design for a module; works across teams to collect and manipulate data and evaluate the impact of results, problem solve solutions, and validate software and hardware against specifications; advises less experienced team members and engineers; defines the test plan.
  • Contributes to complex analyses using appropriate tools; reviews analyses completed by others; identifies if an issue has occurred and assists others in addressing issues.
  • Independently identifies issues in code and provides recommendations to improve performance; partners with peers to run algorithms, takes existing algorithms and adds a new feature, and implements new algorithms using software; connecting algorithms as one solution and partition algorithms between software and hardware.
  • Manages project team to complete complex tasks and troubleshoot issues related to the engineering and management of machine learning data.
  • Develops novel machine learning solutions aligned with proposals or roadmaps for complex products; advises team members and less experienced engineers working together on common tasks.
  • Oversees and conducts experiments across several areas to train and evaluate machine learning models and assists other team members to do the same.
  • Evaluates topologies against performance variables and uses the feasibility findings to review the high-level design; provides recommendations for route/topology to maximize performance, quality, and cost within the scheduled design time while reducing risks to the schedule and implementation.
  • Displays deep knowledge in a specific area; acquires advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitors' products, and advances in various engineering fields related to multimedia systems products and technology; reads technical articles and publications; shares knowledge and seeks best practices from open-source community; shares knowledge with others on their team and helps less experienced engineers understand and apply advanced concepts.
  • Stays abreast of current and future trends to make suggestions in strategic discussions within a domain about the product/technology roadmap.
  • Leads technical conversations; identifies technical issues that affect project or other areas of overall system and synthesizes issues into an appropriate document for discussion with the appropriate audience (e.g., project lead, other team leads).

Physical Requirements
  • Monitors and utilizes computers and test equipment for more than 6 hours a day.
  • Continuous communication (e.g., on conference calls) which includes the comprehension of information with colleagues, customers, and vendors both in person and remotely.
  • Works in the lab, can use hazardous chemicals (e.g., glue, machinery).
