The Director, Hardware Systems will lead the definition and convergence of complex and novel sub-system and product architectures aimed at pushing beyond the state-of-the-art consumer VR systems. These can span elements like new sensing systems, power/thermal systems, and display/optics systems or new overall input devices and full VR headsets.

The role requires expert technical communication with cross-functional teams across ID, hardware engineering, partnerships, silicon, research, supply chain and core technology groups to drive incubation of new technologies from proof of concept through integration into products for mass production. This role requires excellent technical understanding of consumer electronics and virtual reality systems across the stack.

Responsibilities
  • Owning and driving system architectures encompassing compute, displays/optics, system design, electrical, sensors, calibration, and firmware from initial conception through prototyping into NPI, and in some cases to production ramp.
  • Leading a team of highly skilled hardware architects.
  • Technical delivery on hardest architectural problems in early phase concept development (ensuring translation of marketing requirements to product).
  • Technology transfer and incubation from research and core technology teams.
  • Partnership with cross-functional teams to create and document component and module requirements.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams on blank-slate and early-phase prototyping and product exploration, mapping it to strategic and product questions which need to be resolved.
  • Close work with core technology teams and hardware product managers to inform product use cases, constraints, and market opportunities related to new architectures.
  • Organization and execution of full-fledged incubation and demonstration prototypes on the path to the architectural definition.
  • Communication of trade-offs, program concerns and technical direction across and through the greater organization.
  • Guiding management of long term technology investments.
  • Creation of hardware system metrics, standards and tools.
  • Travel up to 15% time domestically and internationally.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering other related technical field or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of product experience in electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, software engineering or similar.
  • Experience driving development of multiple novel consumer electronics products throughout the complete product development cycle.
  • Experience providing product feedback in addition to technical feedback on engineering and design work.
  • Experience communicating complex technical information and concepts to executive teams and across organizations.
  • Experience working with partnership teams and external partners at both a supply base and product level.
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience with virtual or augmented reality or systems aimed at interpreting complex audio visual data streams.
  • MS or 10+ years of experience preferred.
  • Experience with architecture and systems engineering across electrical, firmware, mechanical (experience with worn products preferred), wireless, audio and optical systems.
