The Facebook Reality Labs Research Audio Team is looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to help bring cutting edge virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences and hardware to life through collaboration and commitment. In our Research & Advanced Development projects, we are setting out to fundamentally transform how people interact with sound; bringing these experiences to the daily lives of billions of people. To make this possible, we need a well-rounded team that nurtures kinship, fosters good communication, and is sympathetic to the challenges in these diverse domains.In this role, you will be cooperating with other engineers and researchers to concept, design, and build prototype audio hardware. You will be collaborating and contributing at a deeply technical level and guiding efforts of team members who will be supporting you; including vendors and manufacturing partners. You will design, build, and validate form factor integrations with novel audio components; with a strong focus on ergonomics. You will optimize designs for best acoustics with regards to the size, weight, and power performance needed for the future of AR/VR wearable devices.We are looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, exhibits a sense of ownership, and enjoys an honest and considerate environment. Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical development for audio hardware in a highly cross-functional team environment
  • Design, build, and validate form factor prototypes both integrating novel audio components
  • Manage vendors and manufacturing partners to achieve teams goals
  • Simulate and measure performance of prototype systems
  • Evaluate, develop, and select new materials, technologies, and techniques
  • Mentor and provide guidance to mechanical engineering team
Minimum Qualification
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience working in the consumer electronics field
  • Experience leading multiple engineering efforts across R&D programs in both strategy and execution
  • Mechanical CAD experience (NX, SolidWorks, CREO)
  • Experience with hands-on prototyping and of manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, injection molding, soft goods, etc.)
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
  • MS in ME, Acoustics, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • Experience growing the engineering team
  • Experience in wearable consumer electronics
  • Experience in Audio Hardware Design
  • Experience with ergonomic driven designs using anthropometric data
  • Experience in failure analysis (both hands-on and analyzing data)
  • Experience with FEA with vibration analysis
