At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), we're developing the future of both augmented and virtual reality. As a Technical Program Manager on the Optics and Display Research Team, you will work closely with Research, Optics and Facebook. You'll be a critical member of a multi-disciplinary team contributing to our efforts making robust experiences possible.The Optics and Display Research team develops device and system level AR and VR optical solutions. In this role, you will work closely with optical, mechanical, electrical and graphics researchers to pull together components and a complete VR optical system. The candidate must be well versed in technical program management skills as well as able to communicate at a high technical level on high risk projects with research experts. Knowledge of material science, optics and systems engineering will be valuable skills for this position.To be successful, you will be eliminating barriers to your team's success, clearly communicating results to all stakeholders and ensuring the big picture stays in focus while delving into the details on specific issues. Ideal team members are collaborative, adaptable and resilient, eager to attack unfamiliar problems with curiosity and tenacity, and able to use a light touch to find ways to help the team be more efficient.
Responsibilities
- Work with the core and extended cross-functional research teams to define and deliver technical solutions for optics and display systems, including new-to-the-world materials and process.
- Manage collaborative projects with external vendors and internal partners. Lead statement-of-work discussion, partner with Business Development and Legal to negotiate agreements, maintain vendor relationships, and drive project deliverables.
- Support research team’s procurement needs.
- Cross disciplinary communication of hardware, software and electrical system requirements.
- Identify and communicate program requirements, scope, constraints, dependencies, and risks. Provide key stakeholders with full visibility of the program schedule, progress and potential roadblocks.
- Proactively identify technical, legal, procedural, logistical, and communication issues and drive creative solutions to fix them and manage risk.
- Coordinate communication between internal and external teams, including vendors and partners. Ensure that the information your team needs is complete, current, accurate, and accessible.
- Establish best practices and refine processes for better communication and positive outcomes.
- Ability to travel 30%, domestically and internationally.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in optical engineering, materials science, engineering or similar field.
- 5+ years of program management experience.
- Experience leading hardware research and development programs.
- Experience leading collaborative projects with external partners to develop new-to-the-world technologies.
- Cross-group collaboration experience across more than one geographic location.
- Communication and presentation experience through all levels of the organization, technical and non-technical.
- Experience learning quickly and adopting core communication systems used by the organization.
- Self-starter with proven analytical and organizational skills.
- Experience creating clarity within complex and ambiguous situations in a highly technical setting.
- Interpersonal skills with experience motivating, influencing, and resolving conflicts.
Preferred Qualification
- Experience working with a cross-disciplinary team including both software and hardware engineers.
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in new material and process development.
- Experience in manufacturing of optical components and systems.
- Track record of leading technology development from concept to products.
