Position Description:
The Zygo Electro-Optics group designs and builds a wide variety of cutting edge optical devices in a wide range of applications including medical imaging, laser surgery, gene sequencing, AR/VR, commercial space, semiconductor, and defense. As the lead optical designer and analyst you will be a key member of the Electro-Optics engineering team working closely with customers to take a broad range of designs from concept to production.  You will also support projects more widely within Zygo for cutting edge optical instruments and optical fabrication.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Apply mathematical and physical analysis capabilities, breadth of engineering skills, and desire to learn to solve both routine and novel design challenges
• Design and tolerance optical products from conceptual design to production implementation
• Own the optical design for meeting performance, reliability and manufacturability requirements
• Develop realistic, cost-effective and practical product specifications, metrology systems, and measurement processes.
• Communicate technical aspects of product design and metrology topics directly to the customer’s technical leads
• Support design implementation and transfer to product development team.
• Support troubleshooting activities for product development and manufacturing groups.
• Support the new business opportunity development and capture process as an optical systems expert.
• Collaborate with other optical designers, mechanical designers, product development engineers and customer engineering teams to develop and improve designs
• Prepare and give presentations summarizing supporting calculations and optical simulation results for internal review and external customer design reviews

Position Requirements:
• B.S. Engr. or Physics, another related field required
• M.S. or Ph.D. Engr. or Physics, another related field preferred
• Rigorous knowledge of optical physics and related mathematical methods
• Advanced proficiency with both imaging and illumination system design
• 5+ years of experience modeling and simulating optical devices with a variety of tools including paper calculations, custom computer code, and ray tracing software
• Advanced proficiency in Zemax and/or CODE V
• Ability to understand optical problems from first principles and use engineering hand calculations to check design and analysis results
• Experience working on a product from concept to production
• Have produced many optical designs that have been implemented in production  
• Used written and verbal communication to clearly and concisely explain analysis problems and results to both analysts and non-analysts
• Experience with verification, and validation of models through physical testing
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions, effectively lead tasks, and meet deadlines
• Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to keep momentum going on projects
• Desire to work in fast-paced environment
