Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Perception is at the center of our research, as it informs our work in displays, optics, rendering, and practically everything else. As a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Applied Perception Science team at Facebook Reality Labs, you’ll be tackling the scientific challenges that define cutting-edge augmented & virtual reality, addressing heretofore-unanswered questions in vision science, displays, and perceptual psychology. This involves both applied and basic science, as they inform our research directions and identify opportunities for revolutionary experiences. We’re committed to a whole-system, multidisciplinary approach to perceptual research, and both collaborate with academic institutions and have opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific questions which cannot be addressed with existing equipment. The position is a fixed-term (postdoctoral) contract for 24 months and requires a PhD in Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Neuroscience Bioengineering, or related field.
Responsibilities
- Research into perception and human factors, both in terms of basic science and how it informs other research and product directions
- Collaborate with both internal teams and academia in research to explore perceptual factors, define limits and specifications, and discover opportunities for revolutionary improvement in augmented and virtual reality displays and systems
- Explore opportunities and requirements to create new virtual experiences and perform research necessary to deliver them
- Collaborate with other researchers, interns, and engineers to identify and develop experimental systems which allow us to answer novel research questions, involving factors both in isolation and as part of an ecologically valid complete system
Minimum Qualification
- Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Bioengineering, Neuroscience , or related field
- Knowledge of the human visual system and experience applying this model to novel situations and predict how the eye, brain, and body will respond
- Knowledge in key areas such as stereopsis, binocular rivalry, color and luminance sensitivity, image quality metrics, signal/image processing, vergence/accommodation, ophthalmic optics, eye movements, and physical/neurological perceptual factors
- 1+ years of experience with experimental methodology, psychophysics, and/or related statistical analysis
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
- Experience with MATLAB, R, Python, and/or C++
- Experience with user studies (psychophysics) and human factors
- Experience with the design of optical and/or stereoscopic display systems
- Experience with the design of eye tracking experiments and analysis of data derived from eye tracking systems
- Experience with the modeling and analysis of 3D geometrical data using standard algebraic and/or quaternion-based methods
