At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), we are developing the future of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR). The FRL Display and Optics (D&O) Hardware team is responsible for productization of D&O modules that go into final products. We are currently seeking a talented and driven Mechanical Engineering Manager with a desire for working across the organization to develop technology and solve complex problems and contribute to the future of AR/VR advancements.

Your job will be to manage a team of high caliber optomechanical engineers incubating research into product level readiness and optimize design for manufacturability and scale. You will work cross-functionally with teams that will dynamically change depending on the problem and will include optical, firmware, software, and research experts. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and then mature the design to high-volume consumer product solutions. You will lead a group of experts in mechanical and optomechanical design working in a matrix organization supporting engineering efforts in Display and Optics. We seek a team leader that can build and manage teams that will deliver innovative products.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of Optomechanical Engineers and lead engineering activities in a cross-functional hardware team.
  • Lead the team participating in architectural development with display & optical modules focus.
  • Partner with product management, technical program management, manufacturing, operations and other engineering groups to facilitate effective collaboration between teams.
  • Help incubate new technologies into research prototypes and transfer to product realization.
  • Identify key roles required for team success and recruit top engineering talents.
  • Willingness to travel upwards of 15%, domestic and international, to support builds, meet with suppliers, and work with a multi-site hardware teams.
  • Help engineers develop their careers, assigning them to projects tailored to their skill levels, long-term skill development, strengths, and work styles.
  • Collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines in a team environment.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing engineering teams through product development cycles.
  • 8+ years’ experience in product design or mechanical system development.
  • Experience working independently and managing priorities in ambiguous situation.
  • Creative problem-solving experience.
  • Mass production experience, working with both domestic and overseas manufacturing.
Preferred Qualification
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience with VR/AR systems.
  • Experience in technology incubation or in prototyping.
  • Experience with optical components, modules and assemblies.
  • Experience with metrology equipment design.
  • 8+ years’ experience managing design teams for high-volume consumer products.
  • 10+ years’ experience in product design.
