Job Description
FREELANCE PROJECT MANAGER
IMMERSIVE, AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION FOR LEO VILLAREAL STUDIO
Leo Villareal Studio is a fine art studio located in Brooklyn, NY specializing in the creation of sequenced light artworks. During his 25-year career, Leo Villareal has realized projects worldwide and has developed custom software tools for a variety of platforms that allow him to create complex visual effects and present them on bespoke LED lighting arrays and other display devices.
We are seeking a part time, freelance Project Manager to oversee the development phase of a large-format, immersive audiovisual experiential installation. The Project Manager will coordinate and manage our creative team in delivering a client presentation consisting of various deliverables including a VR simulation, a working, physical prototype, and project decks describing the full technological, chronological and financial scope of the project. If the project is approved, we intend to retain the position through installation of the artwork. Therefore the ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing multimedia installations (museum work, industrial/experiential, and other multimedia temporary exhibits are most applicable).
Reporting to the Studio Director the Project Manager will oversee and coordinate production in multiple simultaneous disciplines and phases:
- The central responsibility of the role is to actively manage the project's creative team, including software developer, sound/light hardware developer, architectural designer, and VR supervisor, to enable timely completion of the deliverables.
- Responsible for managing the development phase budget and schedule, including keeping up-to-date cost tracking, proactive mitigation of potential schedule or budget disruptions, and keeping complete, accurate financial and technical records of the project.
- Responsible for generating the full-scope project budget and schedule, revising in tandem with the evolution of the project concept & execution plan.
- Lead production meetings.
- Under the supervision of the Studio Director, prepare and present client-facing status updates, including budget and schedule reports, design & build progress, and installation planning.
- Manage multiple technicians in the development of Environment/experience design in 2D and 3D, including Unreal Engine-based desktop simulation, and VR.
- Drive the production of audiovisual media deliverables for partner presentations and physical demos: decks, stills, edited animations, and possible VR experiences.
- Coordinate the integration of display, lighting, and Spatial Audio hardware for both design development and eventual final experience production.
- In collaboration with the staff Design Lead of Architectural Scale Projects, coordinate the mechanical design of sculptural objects (development and prototyping of the display support armature and supporting environment including artist-designed furniture).
- In collaboration with the staff Content & Concept Designer, coordinate software development of prototype authoring and playback tools for integrated visual, audio, and VR content.
- Oversee the complete and accurate documentation and archiving of the project, including technical and installation manuals, archiving of development assets, digital filing of production documentation and photo/videographic documentation of the artwork.
Prerequisites:
- Positive, can-do attitude -- tempered by the wisdom and authority to tell creative team members “no” when necessary
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good bedside manner
- 5+ years experience as a producer or project manager for large-scale experience design or multimedia installations
- Experience managing software development, in particular coordination of an integrated workflow between software team members who integrate software sets into a VR environment
- Extensive experience working in creative artist/designer-driven environments
