Are you naturally curious? So are we at MKS. Our collective curiosity drives us to be an innovation leader in many industries. Our products drive technology advancements across a wide range of applications such as 5G, augmented/virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, clean drinking water and space exploration. We are a team of collaborators who value fresh thinking and believe in mutual respect, constructive candor, diversity and inclusion. As a valued and trusted partner to our customers, we are continually pushing the boundaries of possibility. We believe in creating technology that transforms our world and are looking for like-minded individuals to join our team. If this is appealing to you, we want to meet you.

In this role, you will lead and manage the product development efforts for advanced optical gas analyzers. This includes leading the creative and efficient implementation of product design as guided by market requirements. It also includes performing systems engineering tasks for required optical designs, electronics control systems, and signal acquisition and data processing.

The individual in this role will lead an engineering team working on next generation products while supporting existing product lines. This system engineer has to be able to draw from a background in electronics, optics, mathematics, and physics and be able to go back and forth between theory and practical application. Good engineering practice means that this person has to back up work and conclusions with solid reasoning, and this means making sure theories agree with data. The ideal candidate will be experienced in the challenge of optimizing low cost, high quality, and differentiated performance to design innovative analyzers while providing the “systems engineering glue” that combines the efforts of other engineers on our team.

This role offers a hybrid work option for days remote and onsite at our Methuen, MA office.

We are looking for an exceptional Principal Systems Engineer who can…

  • Lead the development of next-generation optics-based analyzers including filter, FTIR and laser based spectrometers
  • Manage development and engineering programs to meet performance, schedule and budget objectives
  • Create system level engineering design specifications based on marketing requirements
  • Allocate sub-system level design specifications (cost budgets, error budgets, analysis of sub-system interactions) based on system engineering requirements
  • Evaluate optical, electronics & control systems including hands-on prototyping, testing and validation efforts
  • Serve as lead technical contact for interaction with key suppliers.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reductions and quality improvements in our products.
  • Perform engineering analysis on critical form and function areas.

What will you bring to the team, along with your curiosity:

  • M.S. degree in Electrical or Optical Engineering or equivalent with 10 years of experience or B.S. degree with 15 years of experience
  • At least 4 years of experience in product development, engineering, interfacing, integration, and testing of complex hardware/software systems to include requirements reviews, developing concepts of operation. Must have led at least 2 new product development projects as the systems engineer.
  • At least 4 years of experience in Systems Engineering
  • Expertise in optical (preferably infrared and laser based) sensor systems and supporting electrical, mechanical, and optical systems is preferred.
  • Zemax expertise preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to model, design and characterize complex (preferably optical) systems from top-level specifications
