The FRL-R Audio team is looking for an experienced UX Research Scientist to help define AR/VR audio experiences for the next generation of wearable computing devices. We are looking for a candidate who can leverage their expertise in user experience research to join our growing team. To succeed in this role, you’ll need a PhD in psychology, human computer interaction, human factors, or a related field, the deep knowledge scientific knowledge necessary to develop new research methodologies to investigate undefined problem spaces, strong applied research skills in consumer technology and a proven track record of uncovering the user insights and feedback guiding innovative solutions to difficult problems. As a UX Research Scientist at FRL-R, you’ll work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to build new experiences incorporating multimodal interaction, digital signal processing, acoustics, hearing sciences, auditory perception, and artificial intelligence. Responsibilities
- Drive the development of future AR/VR platform’s audio HW design by conducting state-of-the-art human-science focused research encompassing perception and cognitive processing of and interaction with auditory signals
- Co-develop new categories of contextual audio HW, ML algorithms, and experiences by inventing new research methods to simulate and test the early research-grade HW and SW systems
- Plan and execute UX-focused research to inform audio-centric experiences and their user interactions, informing the direction of new AR/VR audio technology research and products
- Work with research scientists, designers, engineers and PMs to identify research questions that can yield actionable insights and shift research and development directions of the team
- Develop standardized UX metrics and research processes as appropriate for various projects and research programs across the broader organization
- Communicate research insights with appropriate teams and cross-functional partners by proactively identifying opportunities to share, using various communication channels
- Work with research leads to develop strategies to inform and evaluate new XR audio technology development from a UX perspective
Minimum Qualification
- PhD in Psychology, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors or a related field or equivalent experience
- 4+ years of experience in conducting UX-focused research on consumer technology hardware and software interactions in an industry setting
- 4+ years of experience in developing and applying scientific knowledge and a wide variety of research methods to uncover insights from human behaviors, communications, or other aspects of human interactions with consumer technology
- 2+ years of experience in owning the full end-to-end research process of planning, recruiting, executing/facilitating, analyzing, and reporting the insights
- 2+ years of experience in working in a cross-functional work environment collaborating closely with designers, engineers, product managers or other interdisciplinary partners
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in planning and executing UX research for a consumer audio product from conception to shipping
- Experience in conducting and advocating for UX research in a Research & Development environment
- Experience in conducting UX research for transferring research-grade technology to product in an industry setting
- Familiarity with VR, MR, AR platforms as UX research environments
