Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
At Facebook Reality Labs, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing, modeling, and prototyping advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. This is a full-time position which requires an advanced degree in optical engineering, physics, or similar, and a strong background in optical system design and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team. We are seeking a full-time researcher with expertise in photonic integrated circuit device design, fabrication, and testing. The candidate will have a track record in photonics and functional component technologies and will work closely with our team of researchers and engineers on nanofabrication technology. Candidates must possess a fundamental understanding of photonic integrated circuit design and industrial fabrication. Specifically, candidates should have experience in the fabrication of silicon integrated circuits and optical circuits in CMOS compatible foundries and/or research grade labs. The ideal candidate would demonstrate possessing a deep understanding of the typical integration flow required to fabricated highly integrated electrical and optical circuits.
Responsibilities
- Explore applications of photonic modules for next generation AR/VR display and sensing prototypes with an emphasis on both new functionality and new concepts
- Develop new designs of functional photonic integrated circuit components, systems and interfaces with different optical channels, etc.
- Conduct performance test and analysis and comparison of different approaches/designs with respect to key figures of merit
- Collaborate with the larger FRL team and provide creative solutions for display, imaging and sensing technologies
- Build collaborative relationships both internally and externally to support product development and research initiatives
Minimum Qualification
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of Physics, Optical Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Demonstrated design skills with research projects or work experience for photonic integrated circuits
- Experience with mathematical and practical aspects of integrated photonic devices, semiconductor physics, and micro/nano-optics
- Experience with scientific programming languages or optical simulation tools such as Python, Lumerical, MEEP, or similar
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualification
- Experience with photonic integrated circuits fabrication and test
- Experience with photonic design tape out and work with foundry
- Familiar with traditional CMOS processes and integration flows
- Experience with diffractive optics (such as hologram, metasurface, etc.) design fabrication and test
- Demonstrated experience or widely used contributions to open-source projects
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications
