Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that ship in five to ten years. Come work alongside world leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in optical engineering, physics, or similar, and a strong background in polarization optics, optical system design and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team.
Responsibilities
- Develop new concepts and technologies for next generation Near-Eye Displays (NEDs). These areas could include polarization optics, physical optics, optical system design and optical metrology.
- Design, model and/or prototype critical technologies to drive system performance and to validate achievable visual experience.
- Research and development of emerging concepts in imaging systems and optical systems in support of NEDs.
- Support evaluation and characterization of optical components, and system integration.
- Collaborate with the larger research team to explore concepts, perform trades and drive optical system development to create compelling experiences.
Minimum Qualification
- Masters degree or equivalent experience in the field of Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
- Knowledge of methods of light propagation, both in wave and ray domains as well as in mixed models.
- 3+ years of industry experience in applied research and/or product development of optical systems requiring any combination of the following: imaging, illumination, physical optics, polarization optics, stray light analysis or holography.
- 3+ years of industry experience with laboratory work in setting up of optical systems, and experience with optical metrology methods.
- 3+ years of industry experience with polarization optics and physical optics modeling tools, such as LCD-Master, MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, and methods such as Jones Matrix, FDTD, or RCWA, etc.
- Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification
- PhD degree or equivalent experience in the field of Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a similar field.
- 5+ years of industry experience in applying existing and emerging optical technologies, and incubating an idea from concept validation to system improvement of NEDs.
- 5+ years of industry experience in one or more of following fields: 1) polarization holograms design and/or prototyping, 2) polarization optics metrology, 3) Electro- optics metrology.
- 3+ years of experience with polarization aberration analysis and polarization ray tracing of optical systems.
